135 OCT. 15, 1906. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. THE BURKES, Comedy Sketch:- 14 min. F.S. cl. in 1. 3 shows. On at 6:49. Man and woman, Miss Burke working straight and John in messenger-boy comedy make-up. Very acceptable opener. Young lady makes a pleasing presentation and sings quite well. There were some scattered laughs throughout the act. Their time in 1 was not over a minute which was absolutely useless. We were under the impression that there was a close of about 4 minutes in 1. THOS. MEEGAN & COMPANY, "On the Q.T.":- 23 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 7:03. Have offered this act here before, but now they have another and better support. Started rather slow, but gathered interest as it went along,-received some few scattered laughs. Close was only fair. HEDRIX & PRESCOTT, Sing. and Dancing:-10 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 7:26. Man and woman making a very good presentation. Girl makes two changes of costume, both of which are brilliant. The singing is very weak, but they got by with a certain amount of style and vivacity. Their dancing is expert and about the only thing there is in this act. Closed good. EMERSON & BALDWIN, Jugglers:- 10 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 7:29. Two men, one working blackface and the other straight. Juggle rubber balls, hats, oranges, etc. Act contains a good many surprises and laughs. The club-swinging is especially clever, something like that of the Five Mowatts, and created considerable applause. Two curtain calls. LILY SEVILLE, English Comedienne:- 15 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 7:39. Her English character songs were in costume and went very well, particularly the old chestnut, "Waiting at the Church", which was well sung and was loudly applauded. Four selections got good applause. Close was O.K. DELPHINO & DELMORA, Clown Musical Act:- 15 min. F.S. close in 1. 2 shows. On at 7:54. Man and woman, offering selections on various instruments,- concertina, musical pipes, etc. The musical part is fairly good, but the interest of the act was principally on account of the grotesque make-up of the man who uses electric lights in his costume. In the close in 1 the man appears on a prop donkey with bells, the donkey meantime breathing fire. The man is made up in the character of Roosevelt, but it is doubtful if it is in good taste, as the burlesque received only a small hand. Good for an early place only. NELLIE BEAUMONT & COMPANY, "Lizzie's Xmas Day":- 18 min. F.S. close in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:10. Supposed to show the seamy side of stage-life. Opens with F.S. disclosing same in the state of chaos behind the scenes, followed by five minutes singing in two, and closing in 1. There is absolutely no coherence or plot in this sketch, but it gives opportunity for Miss Beaumont and her support to sing songs and give some dramatic imitations. Miss Beaumont appears in a very fetching costume and sings well Comedy very shy and the laughs very few and far between. The close was very weak for an act of that length. May pull up later, but the outlook is not encouraging. most beautiful and spectacular effects ever accomplished on any stage, and caught the audience and the Press immediately. At the close there was one curtain call after another, with a storm of applause. It is distinctly novel, and the finish is one of the grandest sensations ever seen. It will certainly draw people to the house this week. The Press is very flattering this morning. Howe, the backer, assures us that it will pull up much stronger during the week. As for the HARNDIN BALLET too much cannot be said in praise of it, and it will undoubtedly draw big business to the house. We have billed it pretty strong and are very fortunate to have it for two weeks. The weather is ideal for show business and the houses are big. FEJ.
