141 OCT. 22, 1906. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E.BARNS. HARRY BOTTER & COMPANY, Comedy Sketch:- 18 min. F.S, 3 shows. On at 7:06. This is a very good sketch, well written and played with plenty of ginger. It concerns a matrimonial quarrel in a lawyer's office where husband and wife are simultaneously seeking a divorce through general misunderstanding. The last time the act was played here is was very crude and amateurish, occasioned by the breaking in of a new man and woman. In its present shape it is a thousand percent improved, full of fire and energy and replete with humor. Would go very well in any two-a-day section, and in the three-a-day section it is certainly valuable. It will go down fourth on the bill for the rest of the week. HALLEY & MANN, Comedians:- 16 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 6:55. Two men working blackface. A good line of talk with songs that went well. The dancing at the close is the best part of the act, and got a good hand. The finish was creditable, with one curtain call. NESSEN, HUNTER & NESSEN, Jugglers:- 9 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 6:45. Two men work straight and one eccentric. Work principally with hoops and Indian clubs. Quite yp to the standard, making a good opener in any house. Hardly novel and strong enough to go further down the bill as this sort of an act has been done very much better by others. However, it held its own quite acceptably here KIMBALL & LWEIS, Song and dance:- 15 min. F. S. 3 shows. On at 6:30. Man and woman, woman working straight and the man eccentric. The comedy is only comedy in name, as it is certain-very weak in fact. The girl opens and closes the act with a song, which is only fair. The man works with tables and chairs doing equilibristic stunts, and is compelled to resort to the slapstick to get a laugh. Uses a property boy as a helper and handles him rather roughly. The act was a distinct fall-down and scarcely received a laugh throughout. Closed weak. For the balance of the week elected to do supper-time. WILL MEAD and dog "[Sparkle?]":-12 min. in 2. 3 shows. On at 7:30. Very well dressed and interesting act. The dog is certainly remarkably well trained and intelligent. He tells time, rings bells in tune, picks out letters of the alphabet and in other ways shows high intelligence. Especially pleasing act for the children. Liberal applause at the finish. LELIA TAYLOR, Vocaliste:- 11 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 7:41. Well known on the Circuit, and one of the best of our three-a-day vocalistes. Each one of her songs got a good hand, and the finish was, as usual, good. QUIGG, MACKEY & NICKERSON, Comedy and music:- 17 min. F. S. close in 1. 3 shows On at 7:52. Two men working straight and one blackface. Give selections on various instruments,- trombone, hautboy, cornet, musical pipes and xylophone. The comedy is a relief from the music numbers, which are good, particularly pleasing because of their diversity rather than their skilful execution. The cornet soloist received the larger share of the applause. The xylophone selections went particularly well. Close in 1 was full of good comedy and rewarded with a good hand. [undersheet] ...of two husbands who are supposed to have taken a sea voyage from England to America, but who go to Scotland instead to have a good time. The ship is reported sunk, but is afterwards found to be safe. The men have a struggle to lie out of both ends of the situation, and there is no end of fun throughout the entire sketch. The close was immense with two curtain calls. EMPIRE COMEDY FOUR, Music and comedy:- 20 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 9:39. Four men, all working eccentric, one an actor, another a Dutchman, a third a "Willie Boy", and the fourth a sport. Sing with considerable charm and precision. Their fun is of the coarser order, but is spontaneous, and caught the crowd immediately. No end of supprises and tomfoolery. Four curtain calls at the close and compelled to give an encore and two curtain calls. A valuable acquisition.
