183 HARLEM OPERA HOUSE CRITICISM Nov. 26th, 1906 E.F. ROGERS CAVANA: Wire Act. Young man of pleasing appearance. Gets away with some very excellent tricks. Excellent opening act. 9 min.-full stage CHARLOTTE RAVENSCROFT: I presume this young woman could just about pass in the continuous houses, as she is not strong enough for an early place on the bill at 8.15. Her violin work is very rough and crude. Her voice needs cultivation. Just about got by. 8 min. in one 4 MASONS: John-William-Altana-Jennie. In their laughable absurdity, "A Country School." The best thing in this act is their billing. It is funny how they got in. Somebody surely has done an injustice. The man is alright, but the balance are amateurs. 19 min.-full stage HALLEY & MEHAN: Talking, singing and dancing comedy. Work in whiteface. Material remains all about the same. Secured some few laughs, strongest feature being their dancing, which brought the audience back from the bad effects of the Masons. 12 min. in one ALLINEI & HIS MONKEY:-"Peter, the Great" Commented upon from the other houses. The monkey was evidently feeling good to-day and gave an excellent performance. Applauded throughout. An excellent act. 20 min.-full stage THE PHAYS: Part one. Preliminary to the Expose'. This part of their performance consumed nine minutes. Rather long and will cut it down to about 5 minutes. HAYES & JOHNSON: Presenting their comedy:-"A Dream of Baby Days." A big hit from the start. Plenty of laughs. Quite novel. Interesting throughout. Compelled to take several bows. 26 min.-full stage-closed in one ELECTRIC CRICKETS: Well known. Pleased immensely. Excellent singing spectacular novelty. 17 min.-full stage MULLEN & CORELLI: Acrobatic comedy. Well known. Applauded and laughed at throughout. 11 min.-full stage DAVE LEWIS: His material is about the same as presented in the other houses except that some parts of his monologue now resembles Cliff Gordon's work. He pleased, however, and held this place in good shape. 17 min. in one Big applause on the finish. 31 min. FRED RAY & CO: Shakesperian burlesque. Laughed at throughout. 18 min. in one MERKEL SISTERS: European Gymnasts. 4 women. Pleasing appearance. Nicely costumed. In a series of acrobatic and equilibristic work. A great act. Everybody can go the limit on their advertising, as it is one of the greatest of its kind ever presented. 10 min.-full stage KINETOGRAPH "Choosing a Servant" Fair comedy. "Merry Frolics of Satan" Quite long and tiresome. Kinetograph Show on the whole is bad. Will make a change.
