186 NEW YORK CRITICISM--DEC. 3rd, 1906. THE GAGNOUX---Man and woman in Juggling and balancing act that has a great many novel features. There is something doing all the time, and the act must have cost them quite a little money to put on. It cannot be beaten for an opening act. 14 minutes, full stage, three shows. DU BOIS & MONKEY--An amusing animal act that makes a hit with the youngsters. The monk is very intelligent and funny. Big hit. Corking three show act. 11 minutes, full stage. BERTINA & BROCKWAY--Two girls in songs and dances. Fair appearance and nicely dressed. Change to full tights and do ring contortion act that has been done to death this season. Only ordinary act that just gets by the three show section. 11 minutes in one. THE PICQUAYS--Man and woman. Neat refined and well dressed. A great hit and a novelty. Head balancing, and the man does a dance on his hands. 8 minutes, two shows that brought the house down. This is a new and valuable act at the money, and is worthy of a better place on the bill. Full stage. FITZGERALD & GILDAY--Two men, one straight, and the other Comedy Irish in songs and talking. Very good three show act. Their talking is up-to-date, and quite funny. this act made a hit. 12 minutes in one. VOLTA---As I predicted this act made a hit, but was greatly marred by bad arrangement of lights, and not being actually ready with all his tricks. It lacked the true show man idea. I will send a further criticism of this act to-morrow or the next day. 20 minutes, full stage. QUAKER CITY 4---Four men, three straight and one Comedy with special scenery and effects. The three straight men sing well to-gether and got a fair hand. The Comedy man is weak. The middle of the act where they all sing is not at all good and they sang out of tune to-day. The close in one is funny, and the closing song is better than the rest. 24 minutes, full stage, and close in one. Not a strong act. WATSON'S BARNYARD---The same old act and the same big hit as usual. It is the best animal act of its kind, and even the "London Punch" Comedy of Watson fails to interfere with the genuine hit of the animals. 20 minutes, full stage. to selections played on the Stage. 14 minutes, full stage. STANLEY & LEONARD---Man and woman. Here is a good, and valuable act. Everything they do goes well, and the woman's male impersonation is remarkably good. The act is a big hit. 15 minutes in one. CARLETON MACY & MAUDE HALL---In "The Magpie and the Jay." Three people. Miss Hall is splendid in this sketch, and her Bowery talk made a big hit. The old Woman was also good. Mr. Macy plays an unthankful part well. The sketch is good, entertaining, and well written, and held up this place very well. Miss Hall's blending of pathos and comedy is a rare treat. 22 minutes, full stage. Three Curtains. BAKER TROUPE---Four men and a woman in Comedy Bicycle Act. The principal Comedian is very funny, and they all do some very difficult and new tricks. It is a corking good closing act. I had to cut the "Loop the Loop" part of this act, as we did not have room on the Stage for it, but the finish of the act received a big hand. 13 minutes, full stage. KINETOSCOPE-- "A Difficult Problem." A very amusing Film. "Friendship better than Riches." Very pretty series of pictures colored. "At the Sea-Side." This is one of the best Films we have had. Interesting and very funny. NOTE--The hardest kind of show to work. Three distinct waits that cannot possibly be helped. Acts in one must be scarce. Will try and get Volta to close in one. Lindsay Morison.
