207. HARLEM OPERA HOUSE CRITICISM E.F. ROGERS December 24th 1906 --oo0oo-- C O M M E N T: While the audience was large in size and very enthusiastic, the Quigley Brothers were a frost. I doubt if the reputation of Grace Van Studdiford in this country town is worth the money we are paying her. The show is good in spots, but on the whole it is the poorest we had here for many a day. LaMAZE BROTHERS: 3 men. Acrobatic comedy. Two eccentric and one straight. Quite an excellent opening act. Have some very funny falls. Good comedy. Thoroughly alright as an opener. 11 min. full stage. LEW HAWKINS: This man has quite a raft of new material. As usual, the audience were a little slow and his material went to the winds. However, he held this place in fairly good shape. 16 min. in one MONROE, MACK & LAWRENCE: Presenting:-"The Servant Girl Question. " Well known. Rather inconsistent for this audience. Went welll in spots. 17 min.-full stage COOK & SYLVIA: Dancers. Scored immensely on their dancing. Compelled to encore. 16 min. in one GRACE VAN STUDDIFORD: Accorded some little advance applause. Pleasing personality. Great voice. The selections are excellent, each one being strongly applauded. The best part of the audience this afternoon did not know this woman and to the one who knows her salary, would be like playing Henry Irving in Hoboken. 9 min.-full stage QUIGLEY BROTHERS: In their talking comedy:-"Election Day." These boys might just as well said their entire act in German, because it is uninteresting to an audience of this class. Got some few laughs in spots and finished with a soft-shoe dance, which received some little applause. Will see how they go with the night performance. 1 7 min. in one MR. ARNOLD DALY: Assisted by Isabella Urquhart and Percival T. Moore. Presenting "How he lied to her Husband." Mr. Daly received some little applause on his entrance. Act is rather tame and talky on the start, but finally won the audience and they become very much interested. Act contains quite a number of good laughs, altho it was a wee bit over the heads of the audience this afternoon. Finished to big applause and responded to an individual encore. Presume he will be a money-getter. 30 min WELCH, MEALY & MONTROSE: They open the act dressed as members of a stranded road company. Introduce a little talk, while two of the boys go through a series of acrobatic stunts. They then introduce a little baseball comedy, entitled:-"Play Ball." To an admirer of this game, the comedy
