214. NEW YORK CRITICISM, DEC. 31st, 1906. NESSEN, HUNTER & NESSEN---Three men in Indian Club Juggling and Hoop rolling. They made several mistakes owing to nervousness, but the act went well. 12 minutes, full stage, three shows. TYSON & BROWN---Man and woman in songs and dances. The woman's voice is awful. The dancing is only fair. Very bad act. 10 minutes in one, three shows. MUSICAL REEDS---Man and woman in Square Cut Costumes playing on brass instruments, but could not evoke any great enthusiasm. Fair three show act, 11 minutes in one. M'LLE NADJI--A good looking, neatly dressed woman who caught the audience from the start. Her work is very good especially on the Stairs she carries. She works very easily, and there is none of that usual labored contortion work about her act. Could stand better place on the bill, got two recalls. 8 minutes, full stage, two shows. ARTHUR FISHER---Mimetic Comedian. Opened with song that did not get a hand. Followed by imitations on the Dave Nowlin order. This act got by to fair applause only. 12 minutes in one, three shows. GORMAN & WEST---Same old act. Someone ought to make these people a present of some new songs. However the act goes well with the audience, and it is the best of the three show acts this week. The Dialogue is amusing. 15 minutes, full stage. Close in one. RAE & BENEDETTO ---Two men, clown and straight in contortion and equilibrium act on suspended ladder. This act went very well, and got big applause. The finish is very good. 11 minutes, full stage. GEO. EVANS---Fourth week of this man. I put him further up on the bill this week, as the latter part of program is very strong, and he went just as big as ever in this spot with new songs and talk. Of course he finishes with his own song which he is trying to make as big a hit as "In the good old Summer Time." He got terrific applause at finish, a and filled in 28 minutes in one. EDWIN STEVENS & CO. Mr. Stevens and a very charming young lady in "An Evening with Dickens" to advance applause. Mr. Stevens first make-up as Micawber was not good, altho' his reading of the lines was. "His second "Uriah Heep" went much better, altho' his acting was much better than the make-up." The third, the Mser in Bleek House. This , on account of the lwo comedy introduced by Mr. Stevens was a big hit, and got big applause. Fourth make-up "Dick Swiveller." This went very well, as Mr. Stevens introduced a short song to show off his good voice. There is no doubt about the act being a big hit, on account of Mr. Stevens being such a clever actor, but his figure and pronounced features are against his making the necessary contrast in the different make-ups. However there is no getting away from the genuine applause he received this afternoon. 29 minutes, full stage.
