APRIL 4, 1910 PHILADELPHIA SHOW C.E. BARNS THE ALPHA TROUPE. Novelty Hoop Jugglers. 11 F.S. This act makes a good opener. Three boys work straight, one of them clown comedy. Carry their own drop which is very effective. Their work is swift and expert. The comedy is all right. A lot of new stunts with the hoop is all applauded. Boys are all well dressed and have a very showy act. Closed well. HEARN & RUTTER Vocalists, wooden shoe dancers. 11 in one. These boys are exceptional good dancers. Their vocal work is not very strong, but their wood and soft-shoe dancing are novel and interesting. The crazy dance at the finish gave the act a good close. KELLY & KENT Comedy, Dance & Song. 19 F.S. close in one. Well known comedy sketch with some new material. The tough girl part and the burlesque melodrama won considerable applause. The burlesque "sporting club" announcement at the close made a hit. STUART: 13 min in one. this female impersonator works along the well known lines, but is exceptionally prepossessing with a good high soprano voice, and has caught on to all of the feminine coquetries without burlesquing. Whenever he uses his natural voice he gets a good laugh. Altogether a very satisfactory act in this spot. Closed very well indeed. Compelled to respond to an encore. VALERIE BERGERE, The Lion Tamer. 25 min F.S. Miss Bergere's act has been described before, and very highly commended as it well deserves. The part of the jealous "Queen of the Lions" suits Miss Bergere's emotional temperament perfectly. The action is swift and the interest is cumulative right up to the melodramatic finish. The costuming and stage setting are elaborate, and the support is all that can be desired. Miss Bergere received a strong advance hand and at the close got immense applause. She is a favorite in Philadelphia and will no doubt draw much business to the house. CHARLEY CASE. Monologue, 16 min in one. Well known on the circuit. Gave the same monologue as previously with some few variations. Plenty of good laughs. Held the spot O.K. GERTRUDE HOFFMAN-New revue. 52 min F.S. close in one. In her second week. Her advance applause to-day was equal in volume to that which almost any act receives at its close here. If such a thing is possible, the act went stronger to-day than at any time last week and she fully sustains the verdict given her in Philada. that she has the greatest act from an artistic standpoint that we have ever played, and as a box office attraction, is absolutely without a rival during the present season. In fact, not since the days of "HOUDINI" has there been a craze such as Philada. is now going through. The business last week was capacity every performance and the advance sale for this week is something enormous, and it looks that we will duplicate last weeks record of the house. Every newspaper in town gave her a special Sunday story and have had something more or less to say about her daily. Conroy, LeMaire & Co. Sketch. 24 min F.S. opens in 1. Same act as presented here before. It would have been impossible to find a better act for this spot, as the opening in one gives plenty of time to make the setting. The whole act went with a roar, and did as well as we had wished for, if not a little bit better. KINETOGRAPH The scar-crow. Comedy film of the regulation French order. Good. GENERAL REMARKS- Gertrude Hoffmann opened this afternoon with practically a capacity house which was very enthusiastic. The balance of the bill plays off very well indeed, although it is not quite as fast a show as we had around her last week, but will undoubtedly give great satisfaction however.
