C. E. BARNS. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. APRIL 21, 1913 ASAKI. 10 min. F.S. Makes a good opener. A clean-cut Jap who is much more expert as a roller-skater than a juggler. Does a lot of regulation juggling work and gets considerable applause for his clever roller-skating. Closed to a good hand. WARREN & CONLEY. 14 min. Held this spot in good shape and could go further down with credit. Good line of material including some trick piano-playing, closing with grotesque backwoods dancing which got a hand. KINETOPHONE. "Dobbs Serving the Writ." 14 min. Caught on fairly well; "The Musical Blacksmiths" - The best of the Talking Movies we have shown yet. Got a hand at the finish. GALLAGHER & FIELDS. 18 min. F.S. This is a mighty funny sketch and is a continued laugh from start to finish. An effective stage setting. Very funny line of talk and stage business which made thoroughly good. Could hold any spot with credit. Closed big. LEO CARRILLO. 16 min. in one. Some of his old material but for the most part new and all of it very good. Made his accustomed hit and could hold any difficult spot. OWEN McGIVENEY. 23 min. A great protean sketch carefully thought out and skilfully presented. Each one of his lightning changes of character parts received big applause. In a class with R. A. Roberts, Henry DeVries and other importations and in some respects he is cleverer than any of them, particularly his woman parts. Closed strong. MADGE MAITLAND. 15 min. in one. Makes a very pleasing appearance and has a well-trained contralto voice. Sang four selections and went so strong that she was compelled to make a repeat on the last number. "DANCE DREAM." 15 min. F.S. This act almost got by in this spot, although it did not create any great amount of enthusiasm for a feature heralded as strong as this was. Depend entirely upon costume and music for interest, using a plain dark background. The singing this afternoon was a joke. The act has been laying off for two weeks and possibly can pull together by tonight, but this afternoon, it was a disappointment. Some applause throughout but very mild finish. NAT. M. WILLS. 21 min. Big advance hand. Made his usual big hit and has for the most part a new line of material. Compelled to give two parody encores to strong close HOWARD'S ANIMALS. 15 min. in one. Well known on the circuit doing their regulation stunts all of which were well applauded. Showman-like and satisfactory as a closer in every particular. KINETOGRAPH. "All on account of a Transfer." Fairly good comedy film. GENERAL REMARKS. This show has plenty of good material, but did not play off as it should this afternoon. Failure of "The Dance Dream" to make any impression at all put a crimp in the last half of the show. Should play better tonight with the revision as follows:- A Orchestra B Asaki C Warren & Conley D Kinetophone E Gallagher & Fields F Leo Carrillo G "The Dance Dream" H Madge Maitland I Owen McGiveney J Nat Wills K Howard's Animals L Kinetograph M EXIT MARCH CUTS GALLAGHER & FIELDS: "Expression "My God" and "H---" LEO CARRILLO:- Words "H---," "damn" and "chicken." NAT WILLS: Expression "Have you seen my better half," in reference to woman in low-cut evening gown.
