NEW YORK SHOW: WEEK JANUARY 12th: ....... STEREOPTICON:- Usual selection of views: [?] minutes in one. KR-CRAWFORD & DUFF: Man and woman in an alleged comedy sketch. These people have played the Providence and Philadelphia houses and I heard no complaint about them, but I hardly think that I should ever have booked them had I seen them personally. They are not especially bad neither are they good. The man is one of the original Croawford Brothers, and while a fairly good dancer, was never very funny. The woman is a very large woman and does not present a very edifying spectacle on the stage. In the upper part of the bill they do no particular amount of harm, but I can only class them as fair. 13 Mins. open full stage, close in one. GHR- LOWANDS CIRCUS:- This is about the same act that these people have always presented here. They consist of two men and a woman, two or three ponies and an equal number of dogs, introducing trapeze work by the woman and some rather clever work by the ponies and dogs, one man acting as ring-master and the other as clown. This is a really good act and pleases everybody, and needs only a good funny man for a clown to make it a big act. 18 minutes; full stage. KR-BIOGRAPH:- It is again demonstrated this afternoon that many of our people have not seen the biograph to any great extent, on account of it coming late in the bill, so that several old pictures in the list this afternoon got lots of laughs and the patrons seemed to be thoroughly entertained all the time. 14 minutes in one. YRR- MR. & MRS. MARK MURPHY:- Presenting a new comedy sketch entitled "Why Doogan Swore Off", and it is very much better than anything they have ever done with us before. Neither of these people are especially clever but they evidently have had the good sense to pay somebody to write up this sketch for them, and some of the situations and many of the lines are really very funny, and gained lots of laughs. It is a good comedy act. GYH- GOLDEN GATE QUINTETTE:-Five colored people, four men and one woman in a comedy singing and dancing act. This act comes very near being the best colored act that we have ever played. They impersonate chinamen and Hebrews and do a lot of singing and dancing that is exceptionally clever and made a most pronounced hit. 14 ins. opening in one, then working in two, closing in one. GRR- VERNON:- Ventriloquist: Same act that he has been doing for the last three or four years, but as always goes good here. 22 minutes; opening full stage; closing in one. GHR- BELLE HATHWAY'S TRAINED MONKEYS:- I was busy on the 'phone when this act went on but Mr Waldo, who saw it says that the act goes very well indeed without being big, but still pleases, which criticism bears out what has been said of it in the other houses. 13 minutes, full stage. NH- WARD & RAYMOND:- This is a man and woman doing a talking and dancing act. The comedy does not amount to very much, but they do some quite clever dancing at the finish of their set, and are valuable on account of the fact that they work in one. 13 minutes. GYH- WESSON & WALTERS CO:- Two men, a woman and a little boy in a comedy sketch. The feature of this act is the little boy, who is supposed to be the bell boy in a hotel. He is very bright and precocious and makes quite an impression. The rest of the people get along fairly well, the situations carrying the act. 20 Minutes; full stage. GYH- GROVINI & MURRAY:- Two women in an acrobatic singing and dancing act. This is the usual sister act, perhaps a little better than the ordinary, as far as acrobatic work is concerned. They dress neatly and did not do anything offensive. 10 minutes; full stage. REMARKS; -----The show ran quite smoothly this afternoon with one exception, and that was a wait between Wesson & Walters and Grovini & Murray. I have obviated this to-night by putting in May Evans, whistling solos. The show will now run through without any waits at all. I see nothing thus far about the new scheme which is not thoroughly all right in every way. The people stayed in very nicely and we had a really good house up to half past five. I am still of the opinion that the system is going to work all right, and I think will give more universal satisfaction than the old plan.
