172 CRITICISM OF SHOW. KEITH'S THEATRE, PHILA., PA. FEB. 2ND. Mr. & Mrs. Larry Shaw-15 mins. in one - Song and dance, using wooden shoes. They dress neatly, but have poor taste as to color effect. Wooden shoe dancing is good; act fair to good. Darmody & Corona-15 mins.-Gar. in 4-Two men, club swinging, juggling and hoop rolling, one working straight and one as a "rube." Clever little sight act that can be classed as good. Matthews & Ashley-15 mins. in one-Two men, one made up as a Jew and one working straight, in a side-walk talking act. Had to cut some objectionable talk. Act is fair to good. Ronzetta & BeLair-12 mins.-gar. in 4-Two men, one eccentric and one straight in an acrobatic act. They imitate Rice & Walters, but are not nearly as good. Act is fair. Hill & Whitaker-15 mins. in one-man and woman, banjo playing and singing. Miss Whitaker's coon songs are especially good. The act went well and seemed to please greatly. Howell Hansel Co.-20 mins.-C. D. F. in 3-Three women and two men, in a sketch by Augustus Thomas, entitled "The Man Up Stairs." It is a corking good sketch, with an excellent wind-up. Hansel is inclined to pose a bit in one part of the sketch, but one forgets this in the excitement that follows. World's Trio-20 mins.-Open in one-C.D.F. in 2-close in one-Two women and one man, singing, dancing and comedy. The women do the most of the work. The man's voice is weak and his singing is not up to the standard. The whole act is good. Lewis & Ryan-20 mins.-C. D. F. in 2; close in one-Two men, one blackface and one make up as a "bum" actor, in a talking act that is excellent. Lockhart's Elephants-25 mins.-Sec. set in 5-Did not work well to-day and nearly broke up Lewis & Ryan's act with their trumpeting. They did no new tricks. Elizabeth Murray-12 mins. in one-A local favorite, who entertains with coon songs and stories. Naturally was very well received. Very good. Tom Nawn & Co.-25 mins-Spec. set in 5-Nawn's first appearance since his trip to Australia last May. He received an ovation at his entry. The sketch, "Pat and the Gwenii", went with screams of laughter from start to finish. Excellent. Fisher & Carroll-15 mins. in one-Two men, one eccentric and one straight, in an Irish talking act. We reserved the song "Mr. Dooley" for this team, although four separate acts wish to sing the song this week. Think this selection was a wise one. [Illegible] Brothers [ilegible]-10 mins-gar. in 4-Four Reading boys who do a hand-balancing act that is absolutely beyond criticism. The boys have gotten away from the old stereotype stuff, and their entire act s composed of startling feats in hand balancing that are really new and original. The audience realized this and their act was applauded through its entire length. I cannot say too much in their favor. We could hold the act another week. Raymond Teal-15 mins. one-Blackface comedian, in songs and stories. The best thing he does is a parody of the Florodora Sextette "Pretty Maiden" song. Had to cut some objectionable talk. Fair to good. Wood & Ray-15 mins.-C. D. P. om 3; close in one-Man and woman, man made up as a "bum" actor, in a singing and talking act. Act can be classed as good. Lew Wells-15 mins.-Landscape in 4-Set H. R.-Fence-Musical comedian. He uses a lot of trick stuff. The act is probably the poorest on our bill this week. It may go better later one, but I doubt it, as Wells hasn't the personality to [illegible] it. Mr. & Mrs. Neil Litchfield-20 mins.-Spec. drop in 4-Set H. R/-fence-In a rural sketch, which contains some humor. Seemed to please and can be classed as good. The show as a whole is probably the best of any we have had. There is not a poor act on the bill and, although there is nothing startling, the show runs along evenly and nicely throughout. H. A. DANIELS.
