309 CRITICISM OF SHOW KEITH'S THEATRE,PHILA., PA. AUG. 19TH The Holdsworths-13 mins.-Gar. in 2-Man and woman, singing, dancing and banjo playing. A [no?t} act. Man is a good dancer. Received applause. Woman can't sing. Hellman-10 mins. in one-Magician;looks and talks like a three-card-monte man at a country agricultural fair. As a card manipulator, he is a [shine?]. He talks too much. He does or says nothing objectionable. Brown & Emery-18 mins. in one-Booked by Mr. Jordan-[illegible]-two men, coons, imitate in make-up Williams & Walker;received "small" hand. Comedian's dancing carries the act. Jas. Horne & Co.-25 mins.-Fancy in 3-Sketch "An Awful Fix"--two men and two women. Horne is all right, but the sketch and the company are not up to the standard. Horne should get a new sketch. He is an excellent actor. Ellie Armstrong-8 mins. in one-Choir boy, booked by Mr. Jordan for [?40]. Sings "The Eternal City" and "Beyond the Gates." Voice is not strong enough to fill the house. Had organ accompaniment. Received a ripple of applause. Rixford Bros.-10 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-Three men, acrobats, two working straight, one comedian. Hand and head balancing. Comedian confines himself to flip-flaps. A good acrobatic act,but not a "big" one. Jessie Bartlett-10 mins. in one-Monologue,booked by Mr. Jordan, $40;acts like a Lyceum entertainer;very amateurish; does a disrobing act during the monologue. The audience [guyed?] her, and drove her off the stage. Mlle. Olive-15 mins.-Pal. in 4-Has improved;works with vim and fire;an excellent "sigh" act;went strong. Rice & Cady-15 mins. in one-German comedians, late with Fiddle-Dee-Dee," good. Harding & [Ah Sid?]-15 mins.-Kitchen in 3-close in one-Same old acts, always goes well;went strong to-day;lively and at the top of its class. Midgley & Carlisle-25 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-close in one-Second time here in "The Doctor Shop," always go well. Our audiences like this act, and Midgley & Carlisle will always be welcomed. Plenty of laughter and applause. Barrows-Lancaster Co.-25 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-Sketch "A Jolly Jollier," one of the best sketches in vaudeville;second time here;went very strong. Mazuz & Mazett-15 mins.-[Wood?] in 4-Man and woman, comedy acrobatic act. If they talked less and fooled less and worked harder, they would go better. Just about got by and that's all. Biograph-15 mins. in one-Trip to the moon. The most interesting film ever produced by a moving picture machine. Russell & Buckley-16 mins. -C.D.F. in 3-close in one-Musical act,one working straight, one blackface;a good "small" musical act for an unimportant place on the bill. Comedy is not above the average. 2. The Castanos-13 mins.-Pal. in 4-Man and woman, open with song;whirlwind dancers. Woman can't sing, but both have a neat appearance. Dancing is good. Comment-The show looks well on paper, but on presentation it seems to lack spice and ginger. Harding Ah Sid, Midgley and Carlisle and Barrows,Lancaster Co. are the whole show. The other acts fill in,but do not seem to bring the show along smoothly and lively up to the three strong ones at the finish. H. A. DANIELS.
