FANTASY-TIMES "The World Of Tomorrow Today!" Vol. 2 - No. 18 Corona 4 May 1947 Whole No. 49 "THIS WEEK" BOOSTS SCIENCE-FICTION 28 April (NNS) The April 27th issue of This Week Magazine, (with the Sunday Herald Tribune in New York) carried Science on a Spree, a fantasy-boosting article, by Leslie Lieber. The article characterizes Campbell as the most outstanding man in the pro ranks, and altho all five of the straight science-fiction magazines are mentioned, it gives Astounding SCIENCE FICTION the biggest plug. Liber's two-page feature on science-fiction concerns intself primarily with the prophetic phase of stf, pointed out some of the accurate predictions pulp stf has made and mentioning the now-famous visit to Campbell of Manhattan Project secret service agents. "Science fiction magazines....have nothing in common with comic books," says Lieber. "...All gadetry and machinery must be scientifically plausible." Fandom also gets a plug in the article: "...There are approximately 250,000 devotees of stf in the United States. They probably constitute the most scientifically-hep reading public in magazine history....They travel hundreds of miles to attend annual conventions..." Lieber's article, the biggest plug stf and fandom have received since Little Superman, What Now? (Harper's Sept. 1946), is illustrated with cuts from Air Wonder, Amazing and (continued on page 51, column 1) PHILCON NEWS CARNELL MAY NOT MAKE PHILCON E.E. Smith May Attend Philcon 30 April (CNS) Milton A. Rothman, director of the Philcon Society announces that in the event Ted Carnell cannot make the "Big Pond" trip to attend the 5th World Science Fiction Convention THis year, the money in the Big Pond Fund will be held for the next convention. Rothman goes on to say that at the present moment, due to difficulties in getting passage, and also due to the ridiculously-small amount of money in the Fund it is unlikely that Carnell will be at the Philcon. This news about the Big Pond Fund, Mr. Rothman informs us, will supersede what is said in the 2nd issue of the Philcon News, soon to appear. The latest member of the Philcon Society is Edward E. Smith, who says that he will be at the convention if no last-minute difficulties arise. The 5th World Science Fiction Convention (The Philcon) will be held in Philadelphia on Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1st 1947. You can help make it a success by joining the Philcon Society.
