March, 1941 SUN SPOTS Page 5 through sheer love of adventure, for John Stern, though wanted by the Solar Police, was not a criminal in the rtue sence of the word. He had never killed a man or destroyed a ship in his life, and he never intended to. Nor would he ever rob anyone who could not afford it. But he was merciless with the society who had outlawed his famous father, and nothing cold afford him greater delight than to watch the multitudinous chins of the Fat Ones wobble with fear when they saw his broad grin and ivory teeth through the outer window of his space suit, and to see their already pasty complexions blanch to an even pastier whiteness as his men relieved them of their cash and valuables. It was a very broad grin, even for Stern, as he sped toward the scheduled spot where he would ambush the liner. Only another 5,000,000 miles, and he would be set. He turned his bronzed face toward the first mate, sitting at the navigating desk in the rear of the control room. "Augie, what's our bearing in relation to Pluto at the Fifth Conjunction?" Auhustus Mahoney, who was an extremely fine navigator as well as being the heartbeat of more than one woman, raised his handsome face from the desk, and replied in a slightly nasal voice which was never-the-less pleasant to the hearer, that they were 10 (degrees) 45 1/2" in the second quadrant/ "We ought to be there pretty soon," he added, with a smile. "Yep, a couple more minutes and you can sound the bow rockets!" Stern swung his lithe body over the control table, and walked out of the room into the Crews' Quarters, where most of the men were either sleeping, palying dimensional pool, or busily shooting crap, another undesirable twentieth Century bring-over. "Stations," Stern yelled, "bow and aft heavies manned. Boarding party ready!" No premonition of disaster ever entered his mind. To be concluded next issue.
