March, 1941. SUN SPOTS Page 10. you liked "Via Jaloppy" - as a first time in print it has me eagerly awaiting comment. Larry Shaw 1301 State Street Schenectady, N.Y. Dear Editors: Letters you want on the anni-ish, hah! O.K. pals, you asked for it, here goes: *** First the front cover. You know, it isn't bad at all, even if the illustration isn't so hot. Why not use the same style on all covers from now on, with the picture a little bigger, and use some idea of the contents instead of Aniversary Issue." *** Inside, and "Citation for Valor." A darned good piece of writting. It didn't have to be science fiction, but it still was a swell little human-intrest piece. *** "The Irony of It All," wasn't bad. I liked the characterization and the situation. It laked something, tho. *** "History of A Foolish Age," was good, but too short. Anoymous had some good ideas there. Really Enjoyalbe. *** "The World of Tomorrow," was fair. The forny style pulled it down. The idea was swell, tho. I'm glad to see poetry in SSP. More! *** The picture wasn't so hot. The Earth doesn't look right; there's too much empty space, and what's that beam connecting the space ship with the moon or planet or something supposed to be? One page wasted! *** "The Martian Observer" is off to a swell start. Definitly give us more. Just one thing tho, put in a few reports that haven't anything to do with the interplanetary situations. You know, make it seem a little more realistic. *** I didn't like "Weapon Needed." The idea wasn't so hot to begin with. And it should have been Mars instead of the Moon. ((By the time they returned from Mars, what couldn't have happened?? -- Think again! -- Eds)) Also how about an explanation of how the snakes could live all packed together like that? (Who said they lived there; read the next part in the April ish of Ssp -- Eds)) *** "Davy Rockette & Daniel Goone" was oke, but a little of this slap stick stuff is plenty. *** Passing onward (Wow, a full paged ad, and not selling anythin geither!) we come to the cartoon. It has its faults, but I like! 'Nuff said. *** On to second section. "Sure We Were Sloppy" was very interesting, I like de la Ree's style. *** "Finis" is oke, nothing special about it. *** "The Greatest Adventure," fell flat! *** Gaetz's editorial was average; I always like this dept. *** Groveman's article was good. A lot of it was unnecessary, but interesting. *** Art or poster was very good. Wright said exactly what I'd say if I could write like Wright. (take it from me, tho, and I just finished a course in Poster Design; AMAZING's covers aren't even good posters!) *** Interview was very good; much more interesting than the biographies in the pro mags. *** "The Way I See It" was terrible. It smelled, and I do mean pew! 'Nother page wasted. *** Way Back When" was good, even if I don't agree iwth most of it. *** Fan Mag Review was O.K. *** "Thoughts At Midnight" was up to the Wellman standard, which is very good. *** Samplings was swell. Showed a lot of thought and style was good. Who's Sampler? ((You tell us Who's Yehoudi, and we'll tell you who's sampler! -- Eds)) *** Trash Basket is alwyas good, possibly the most interesting thing in the magzine. "Death on Mercury" was fair, but the back cover! Gawsh! But I guess you couldn't help it. Keep away from color. *** Issue as a whole, swell. The fiction was as good as the Dept, and articles at last. Now I guess I've worn you out, so I'll say so long and my congratulations too.
