March, 1941. SUN SPOTS Page 11 Lew Martin 1258 Race St. Denver Colo. Dear Editors: Received your latest SUN SPOTS today and was greatly pleased. While there is still room for a lot of improvements, this issue can compare favorably with many I had previously considered superior to yours. Your size is appreciated, but not important. (The thickness I mean.) A little less fiction please. Not that it's bad, for I wouldn't know, not reading it yet, but as a rule I frown on any amateur fiction, or fiction at all, in a fanmag, for we can't get humorous, informative, and interesting articles in the pro mags, while you can get good fiction there, and not in fanmags. Lets have more articles if you can possibly get them. ((WE'll try--eds)). *** De la Ree's editorial was the best feature I've read so far, and after reading it decided to bang out the enclosed article, which is absolutely true. ((Interesting too - eds)) If you can't use it please send it back, I won't mind in the least. *** The absolutely most commendable feature of your mag is its consistancy and regularity. I envy you greatly for this, and by all means keep it coming out on time. Al has folded, or rather is going to fold after the next issue because I have no time to work on it with Denvention stuff pressing me. And the worst drawback of AL's was its irregularity. This is one of the most desirable features of any mag, and you will lose a lot if you miss schedule too much. I'M glad to see it mailed flat, but I supose this is only temperary with the An-ish. (You suposed correctly, Lew -- eds)) Joe Lewandowski, Jr. 102 Kohler Hall, Baldwin-Wallace Col. Berea, Ohio. Dear Gerry: Here's my ratings for the last issue of SSp. The serials are not classed as I can't tell much about them till I read the conclusions. Best in part one was "citation for Valor." A slow beginning and an obvious solution; still I liked it. But Gerry, the language. Tsk, Tsk. *** And running "Citation a close, very close second was "The Irony of it All." At last Plotkin and you have given me proof that you can write. An obvious end and all, but good. *** In next place was the front cover. Your best so far. *** History of a Foolish Age" was next; and your cartoon, and Pogo's drawing (P.U.) came in last. *** I didn't rate the poetry as I didn't know where to put it. It was good stuff, but I don't particularly care for poetry except for ballads. However, some of the other readers do, so I supose you should make it a perminent feature. *** First place in part II was your drawing. The second best you've ever done. Second, "Sure We're Sloppy" (Say, I must be getting to like your style) You sure told Gilbert off. Third, Groveman's report on the Philly Con. Fourth, Trashbasket. Fifth, "Art or Poster". Sixth, Cartoon by Bronson. More, more, more, more, etc. Seventh, and POOR, the rest of the material, except for you FANZINE review. (LRC is going to shoot you. On page 24, Contents partII, you say "Fan Mag Review!" So long, Gerry. It's been nice knowing you. Tsk, tsk. Fan mag! I'm gonna miss you when you're dead and burried.) ((Mr. LR Chauvenet, will you accept our most humble appoligies, even if they aren't spelt correctly, and in the future, we will try and say fan mag as few times as possible? __ eds)) ** MWW's piece was an odd bit with quite a lot in it. I didn't mean to place it this low, but I overlooked it while rating the others. *** My reactions to Larry Shaw's "The Way I See It" is expressed in my own, "The Way I See It," which is enclosed. ((Will be printed later on, Joe -- thanks)). ** And that rear cover series.
