FANFILE Page 13 Across the Pacific from Australia comes a note from Graham B Stone: If I may venture an opinion on your mag, here it is... Why not use a pseudonym when writing (!!!!!) It doesn't look too promising, with 2 stories by the editor in one issue (SPECULA). I would appreciate it if you would use the same kind of paper throughout. Don't know if all are that way, but my first ish is better stapled, or so it seems to me. Trimmed edges!!!! Yum yum. Do mine eyes deceive me, or is the insert for 4SJ's article PRINTED? Fort, you must be made of money. (Insert was run off, one copy at a time, on a proof press. 4sJ supplied the cut.) I just woke up to the pun in "You Too, 35" If all the puns in future issues are as good as that one, I might learn to appreciate them. May I echo the sentiments of your anonymous reader who said "We don't like fan fiction-but we do like 1/403?71/2@ - sorry SPECULA. Please excuse the horrible typographical errors, as it's rather late in the evening, this section of Earth having crawled Into the Darkness, to wit entered the state of Night, and in a short time shall join the ranks of the Slaves of Sleep, in which state Dreams May Come. The obvious answer to this menace is "Don't Dream... P.P.S. I heard the other dar a peculiar criticism of "Darker Than you Think" - that its ending was weak!!!!!!! Doug Webster again, this time under date of August 3, 1941: FMZ DIGEST 4 in yesterday, for which voluminous thanks. Needless to say, I like it fairly well, though personally, I'll have the fmz themselves every time, thank you! Especially like the Paule back cover, since, as usual, 4e has failed to mail me that issue of VOM. I like the Effjay, myself, but I wouldn't trust him an inch where Doug Webster is concerned: he just forgets all about that poor down trodden individual for long intervals now & then. Which is a great pity. (And 4e blames the international situation! What to do?) Mailed off to you a copy of FANTAST two or three days ago... Very sorry the copy will be (I expect) such an awful mess. You can read the latest LeZ for adequate cracks on same, & save yourself the trouble of thinking 'em up! Unfortunately there's a war on over here. I get into town for one day to duplicate the thing on the rotary, find when everything's assembled that the blame thing spits me in the eye & jeers, &, since it's Sunday, can do nothing but laboriously run the dirt off on an unfamiliar flat-bed. Result is bad... Sorry to say, but 'fraid it can't be helped... Love. FMZ DIGEST #5 and SUN TRAILS #2 were finished almost simultaneously, the latter containing our answer to Roger Conway's article about us in "X." We remarked that we were sure it was through an oversight the "RogerConway" had not sent us a copy of the mag. Sure enough, on a card bearing his rubber stamp (his signature might just possibly recognized) and dated August 22, was the following: "My regrets that you did not receive a copy of X number 2. A duplicate has been mailed to you along with this apology." Australia again, and a brief note from David R. Evans: "Dear Arthur: Please accept this note as my personal endorsement of all Joquel II S.T.F. and fantasy fan publications." (Dated 8/25/41). Larry Shaw again, this time under date of September 1, 1941: "ST was even better than the first issue. Best was "Less Introspection, Please." Second, "Early Fan Letters." Third, "'X' Analyses Us." Rest of the stuff all close behind. The art was good. I'd appreciate a back cover, tho. I don't care an awful lot for poetry, so won't comment on it. FMZ DIGEST also very good. "Heathen" was about the best fan-fiction I've ever seen. I think "J. Edward Davis" is the best fan fictionist when he really tries. Fortier was very good. Turner's pic super.
