FANFILE Page 16 We deeply appreciate Joe's offer, but declined with thanks. For, with an eye to winding up the year right, we were redummying all of our material for a magazine which was really going to be super! It bore the tentative title of SPECULA-SCORPIO ANNUAL, and was planned to have about 116 large size pages. The line-up, in case anyone is interested, was: Pge A Dedication 1-2 Contents 3-12 Twilight of Time Joe Gilbert 13-18 Radio Script (untitled) Joquel 19-22 A God on Sunday William Davies 23-24 Our Play (article) 4sJ 25-32 And they Lived Happily... Foo E. Onya 33-36 Dreams' End Dale R. Francis 37-39 Lyric of Doubt (poem) Don Wandrei 40 Science Quiz Arlo Richards 41-44 Cameras at CosmicCity O. Migesh 45-48 Thought-Power Story (untitled) Joquel 49-52 C-Q Earth (article) Arlo Richards 53-55 Vampire Refugee (poem) Janice Owens 56 Short Story (untitled) Joquel 57-70 Starward: Joe Gilbert 71-74 Marvo 12 GO plus (comic strip continuity) Hornig 75-84 Together--Always Dale Francis 85-87 Chant of the Vampire (poem) Nyx 88 Science Quiz Richards 89-92 Vengeance of the Harp Alan P. Roberts 93-94 Hypnosis article Robert W. Formhals 95-112 The Horror at Vecra Henry Hasse 113-115 Letter column 115 Quiz answers 116 Editorial Plus a photo-lithoed cover! This mag was to have been my Christmas present to all my subscribers and exchanges, and probably our last publishing effort for a while. So we were going ahead refunding money outstanding on various subscriptions to our magazines. To keep the record straight, we will print the names and amounts. Previous refunds had included: Harry Jenkins, 50 cents; Francis T. Laney, 10 cents; W.S. Houston, 25 cents; Bill Evans, 50 cents; Grady McMurtry, 10 cents (Grady postcarded back: "The refund almost bowled me over. I didn't know fanzine editors ever did it."). On December 4, a bunch: Russell Gale, 15 cents; Bill Evans, 40 cents; A.W.Bernal, 30 cents; CABeling, 10 Cents; Emrys Evans, 30 cents; Paul Klingbeil, 20 cents; Edwin C. Connor, 30 cents; LRChauvenet, 25 cents; Alex Osheroff, 10 cents; Rajocz, 35 cents; James Oglesby, 10 cents; Larry Shaw, 20 cents; and DBThompson, 25 cents. But on December 7 came the fateful news from Pearl Harbor, and it was at once evident that our publishing would have to be ended. Holding a conscientious objector status in the draft, our future was bound to be frought with uncertainty. So with regret we took out the folder of material for the ANNUAL, read the stories lovingly once more, and put them in the mail to their authors. But the coming of war did not stop the coming of mail. Tom Ludowitz carded us on the 8th of December: "I understand that you have stopped publication of SUNTRAILS and FMZ DIGEST too bad they were two of the best sf on the amateur market. Bill Evans, not having yet received our notice of closing up, wrote, also on the 8th: Received Sun T(r)ails...and since then have been bemoaning the fact that FMZ Digest would be no more. Since I think it is one of the best fmz now being published, and as there are numbers of fans who agree with me, I'm sure, I've decided to see what can be done about it. Here's my proposition: I'd be willing to take over the job of putting out the digest every month, if you would write the material, at least for a while. I'm not much of a writer, but might eventually be able to take over that part too. The only hitch is the fact that it would have to be hectoed, as I don't have access to a mimeo... (Our sincerest thanks, Bill, but our circumstances did not and will not permit it.) Now to other things. I received one of those sheets Hornig sent out, but not knowing anything about the backgrounds, I didn't form an opinion. Still, it struck
