FANFILE Page 17 me as rather a crude thing to do and left a bad taste in my mouth. Therefore, I'm glad to get another opinion on the matter... Re Van Vogt, how about a collaboration between Campbell and Smith? Question for the next six months in fandom: "Who is Van Vogt?" Let's hope we learn sooner than we learned (?) who wrote "Hawk Carse."... Card from Harry Warner Jr., also on the 8th: "Awfully sorry to hear that you're having to curtail publishing activity -- though judging from the things that happened yesterday and today, you're merely the first of many, and just got the jump on the rest of us...If no one else starts the chain (letter) again, I will -- for that matter, it'll be a decent way of maintaining contact through what's ahead. And about a note in Sun T(r)ails: Van Vogt really exists. He's a Canadian; works on a newspaper..." Harry E. Mongold, on December 10: "Thanks for the copies you sent me of your publications...Thought "Sun Trails" especially interesting." Harry Jenkins on the 10th: "Might I extend my utmost congratulations on the attack on Hornig; it was well-written, and pleased me no end. It fits my sentiments exactly...Sorry to see FMZ and SPECULA go; they were swell...Sorry, sincerely sorry to see you hibernate, but it's just 'Auf Wiedersehen' -- Thine." With each letter of refund, we enclosed a return postcard, requesting that an acknowledgement be made of the receipt of the refund. Unfortunately, not everyone obliged. But a number did, and added comments as well: DBThompson -- Settlement OK. Sorry you're quitting. Liked Sun T(r)ails very much; agree heartily with editorial comment on last page. You take the only possible attitude toward Hornig's piece in re Pogo...(This on December 11.) LRChauvenet, 12-11-41 -- Much thanx for refund. Since I've subscribed to dozens of fanzines, many of which went west owing me dough, and this is the first time I've gotten anything back, you may feel sure I'm more than satisfied! Sorry, however, that you feel it necessary to suspend publication. British fandom has carried on under much more adverse conditions than any we have yet encountered. (British laws respecting c.o.'s are also much more liberal than out own.) Larry Shaw, 12-11-41 - First and foremost, I'm very sorry to hear that you're discontinuing your fmz. They were all really outstanding and will be missed by many (at least one). Settlement is perfectly satisfactory. You must be losing a lot by settling up this way... James Oglesby, 11/15/41 -- I am sorry to hear that your publications are folding. I enjoyed them very much. The settlement...is entirely satisfactory... Edwin C. Connor, 11-15-41 -- Sorry your publication had to be discontinued... Paul Klinebiel, Dec. 17, 1941 -- Received from Sun T(r)ails, and the copy of FMZ plus your reimbursement which is entirely satisfactory to me. Sorry to see FMZ go, I liked it very much. However, I suppose a lot of others will be folding now too... Pvt. Emrys Evans, 12-20-41 -- Received your last letter and issue of FMZ Digest which were forwarded to me. Sorry to hear of your discontinuing publication but can understand your reasons... CABeling, 12/23/41 -- I haven't the slightest idea whether or not the dime you sent me is the correct amount or not. Therefore, it's accepted and quite satisfactory. Christmas card from Doug Webster in Aberdeen arrived about this time. And a letter from Theron Raines, dated December 22, 1941: Rec'd No. 2 ST and No. 1 ST(r) about two weeks ago...I am apologizing for being so tardy. But still I'm thinking about how you are sending me in December a magazine dated Summer, 1941. Either you have lost your watch or you Californians just don't know the difference. Oh well, no matter. There had been some doubt in my mind as to what the Stfans would do in the future, and I wondered how it would come about that they would be the race of the future. Your article pointed out certain deficiencies in Stfans, and my doubting is
