STEFNEWS Weekly #45 Gratis; limited circulation Jack Speer 4518 16th NE Seattle 5 Wn (First Column) _________________________ HOME STRETCH But two months remaining of this paper's allotted course, i feel able to relax the "limited circulation" policy considerably. This makes possible sending the sheet to several people who have recently asked for it, and a number of others i've been wanting to send it to, including several figures on the professional side of our hobby. For those, a word of explanation is in order. They will find these pages taken up largely with internal affairs of our microcosm. We have even perhaps unwisely, maintained a policy against book news here. This is not my idea of the kind of material a good general fanzine should feature. It is a result of the complementary purpose of this weekly, to wit, to publish only material of a type which cannot be handled as well by monthly, quarterly., publications. This restriction makes it easier to get Stefnews out every week and gives you a sheet brief enuf to be read immediately on receipt. But since most of the timely news in the microcosm relates to its aforesaid internal affairs, the policy results in little material relating directly to fiction, aside from regular reviews of Astounding and notes on stef in mundane magazines which come to our attention. _________________________ HYPERBOREANS (continued from page 1) taken and Mr. Kos was unanimously elected. He will take charge of the meetings hereafter, beginning with May. Slanry was retained as secy-treas. Slanry then proposed that the club buy a full-page ad in the Pacificon booklet, and the proposal was unanimously adopted. The text of the ad will be drawn up at the next meeting. A further proposal of Slanry's that money for Pacificon memberships for every member be taken out of the Treasury was voted down. Instead, it was resolved that one membership for the entire club should be taken out. A proposal that Charles Fort's works be purchased by the club was vigorously objected to, and will be taken up again at (Second Column) FANZINES THIS WEEK ACOLYTE Spr 46 (Laney). Final issue. In addition to the usual features in good strength, John H Mason discusses supermen and The New Adam, Burton Crane contributes Vagrant Soul 16.4(11.5),. In the letter section, Bloch advertises such rare fantasy items as the 188th edition of Aesop's Fables, an autographed copy of the Bible.; Price points out that as a writer of current war stories he had to do a lot of short-range predicting;. SCIENTIFICTIONIST #4 (Slaner) Editor notes fantasities' realization of the fix we is in, and asks what you are going to do about it.Tucker reviews the Conklin anthology. An astronomer's view of stef is reprinted from the Griffith Observer. A reprint from Technocracy on housing tells how to meet Economic Men's needs, but reveals little knowledge of human beings. Hemmel sorties into Scientifictionist with Fire in the Earth. SCIENCE-FICTION TRIBUNE 16 Apr (Christesen). Expanded to six pages, with news and comments on Vulcan, PSFS, Newarkon attendees, the third current project for a volume index of prozines, dishonesty in republishing a prophetic story, fanzine sloppiness, fanzinews, ktp. PSYCHO May 46 (Schumann; hektoed). Editorial and fillers in a sort of stream-of-consciousness style. The letters include one from Brazier, guessing what AMG Americans will be doing while the Germans are secretly re-arming, and withal indicates little emotional concern on Donn's part about the perils of the day; some fragmentary comments by Speer on celuici and longevity; and Warner on Korzybski, a temporary feeling of weariness on the atomic questions,. Another filler is doppeltok from Time. Most impressive is an editorial on Schumann in Alaska determining to do what he's doing now.. THE RIDER Apr 46 (Hevelin). A remark on the PSFS's convention bid; an assault on fanzines' irresponsibility in publishing unreasonable advertising; and commencement of operations in the Fantasy Sanctum service. ________________________ the next meeting. . . . At 1600 Professor Thomassen, Erik's father, instructor in chemical metallurgy, took us thru the engineering building of the University.
