DIFFERENT TO BE "DIFFERENT". After using up its fantasy material on hand, Different, the magazine edited by old-time stf authoress Lilith Lorraine, will step up its science fiction prose ontent to approximately 90%, and feature 50% science fiction poetry. Future theme of the periodical will be the conquest of space, with $10 being paid for acceptable stories not exceeding 2500 words. Editor Lorraine states: "What we want in science fiction is slick magazine style, future philosophies, governmental systems, psychology, emphasized over methods of warfare and scientific machines, although we want good suspense plots, and specialize on earth meeting civilizations superior to our own from whom we might possibly learn that dropping a bomb is not equivalent to any final victory. Also want stories about mutants and their influence on this and other worlds with a detailed description of their powers of mind and methods of operation." Different, published at Rogers, Ark., has in the past published fantasies by Francis Flagg, Stanton Coblentz, Dorothy Quick and Lilith Lorraine. ACKERMAN AUTHORS AGENCY. SPEER AND FRY VISIT PORTLANDERS. Jack sSpeer of Seattle visited the November 23rd meeting of the Portland Science-Fantasy society, bringing with him Alderson Fry, librarian of the University of Washington medical school library. Mr. Fry, a newcomer to fan ranks, spent the afternoon preceeding the meeting in rummaging among Don Day's pro and fanzine collection. Though John and Dorothy de Courcy had resided inSeattle for some time, this was the first time they and Speer had met and they found a great many items of interest to discuss, spending a large part of the evening comparing notes. A revolutionary new format for The Fanscient, the club's major fanzine, was discussed during the meeting. This format, if adopted, will be all lithographed, and will be different from any previous fanzine in a number of ways. Final decision has been deferred, but announcement should be made shortly after the first of the year. New member Donald L. Vickeroy joined at this meeting. # The December 7th meeting was devoted principally to a work session on getting out The Fanscient #2. Through the cooperation of Milt Rothman, Philcon chairman, the issue was mailed to all Philcon attendees. Also, a number of important items of recent correspondence were read and discussed. -- DON DAY LOS ANGELES REVISITED. Ultra-weird artist Ralph Rayburn Phillips revisited the Land of L.A. recently, dining with Tigrina, and meeting Forry Ackerman, Tripoli and other fangelenos again. He and Gus Willmorth also worshipped the only true ghod, Beer, together. FANTASY FOUNDATION NEWS. The following contributions have been received by the Foundation: Edison's Conquest of Mars, from the publishers; The Book of Ptath, from the publishers, inscribed by A. E. van Vogt, author, "For the Fantasy Foundation -- A permanent organization, Fandom's solidest foot in the door of the Future." --FORREST J. ACKERMAN. FAPA MEMBERSHIP UP. The Fantasy Amateur Press Association is rapidly growing back to full strength. Latest fans to join are David MacInnes, Don Bratton, Rex Ward, Jack Clements, Stan Woolston, Dan Wilson, Bill Rotsler, and Charles Hansen. Details about membership in this active publishing organization may be obtained from the treasurer at 236 1/2 N. New Hampshire, Hollywood 4, Calif. --FORREST J. ACKERMAN. -3-
