Fanart's artiste of the month------ . . . ROY HUNT . . . Born in Denver some years ago for no good reason at all and grew up to be a stf fan. I blame E.R. Burroughs for that dilemma. If Tarzan of the Apes had never come out in the newspaper strip back in '29, I would now be a normal person. But no, it led me on. I began reading the Tarzan books, then other Burroughs books. From there to Sax Rohmer, then to Van Dine, Merritt, Kline, Cummings, Amazing Stories until I branched out to all points of the compass in literature. And what is the result? All of history, all of the universe passes thru my mind in an unending pageantry of Wonder. And then I ask myself, why? Finding I cannot solve this problem I stagger back to 'The Blue Goose' for another beer. Later on I got myself in a worse rut trying to be an artist; a thing I've always regretted. Now there seems to be no escape. Either I must go on or revert to opium. I do, however, admire artists. Sincere artists of course. Hannes Bok, to me, is just that. Though others think different, Bok, with his unique style, is to me the best pro artist in many a moon. I even rate him above Finlay, and I like Finlay very much. Fan art, too, takes its share of praise. I'm amazed at some of the fine things that are turned out. Some far better than those in pro mags. It's hard for me to make a distinction as to who is the best fan artist, since all seem to be equally sincere in their efforts. All I can say to those who really like art, is, to carry on, chin up, and sling that paint! Back in high school in '34 I met Chuck Hansen. I also met some blondes. Hansen liked stf at the time, and of course so did I. In 1938 I met him again since high school days. He had just completed college. Again we talked stf. Later I met Lew 'Casonova' Martin. Later still I met Olon 'Seed' Wiggins. He helped us with the first 'Alchemist' and that was our first venture into fan activities. The results were amazing! Everyone liked us! What swell people these fans were and how I wanted to meet talk with them. Too, I realized that I wasn't the only abnormal person There were others. I regret not having been able to attend the Chicon due to work, but now I shall be compensated for the fans are coming to Denver (I hope) to the World Science Fiction Convention, July 4,5, and 6. So much for Hunt. -x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x- Next issue's biog will be that of the Comet master, Tom Wright. *:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* Watch for-- SOUTHERN SLANT(T)S...bi-weekly Southern news sheet by the editor of FANART....5c an issue or 6 for 25c...features column by Joseph Gilbert of Slan-der! fame.
