From Off This World, Edited by Leo Mangulies and Oscar J. Friend, MERLIN PRESS, 430 pages, $2.95. (10) From time to time in recent years there have been proposals that the Hall of Fame reprints should all be reprinted in anthological form. Now that publishing science fiction is well thot of, the job of selecting the best of the H of F has accomplished by two men both very capable for this job. To glance at the contents page is to look upon the best stories written by the very best of authors in the past 15 years. Where could you find such names as Hamilton, Keller, Miller, Smith, Kuttner Weinbaum, Williamson, and many more. Its difficult to pick a favorite among these eighteen stories but I found "A Martian Odyssey" and "The Conquest of Life", just as interesting and enjoyable as when they first appeared in SS. Some may enjoy "The Man Who Evolved" the story of a man who went to far on the road of evolution or you may like "The Green Torture" a story with a trick endins and packed with suspense. In the introduction the editors on what basis the stories were selected. "Thet have been selected not alone for their literary merit or their entertainment value but because they also are the stories upon which modern science fiction is based and which a real understanding of its achievements and purposes can be gotton". A colorful jacket by Finlay and a swell job of binding makes this a must for collectors. Lester Fried... Skullface and Others by Robert Howard ,Arkham House, 474 pages 5.00 There is nothing bad to say about this collection of 24 stories that there aren't m ore of them. It would be hard to describe the style in which Howard writes but in h is introduction Mr. Derleth states "Howard had a faculty for telling stories which was equalled by few of his conlemporaries in Weird Tales story was always primary atmosphere( which he could do well), character all else were secondary." That sums up in a few worlds the genius that was Robert Howard, a writers who ranks with Lovecraft, Smith, Whitehead as of the best to see print in the good old days of Weird Tales. I might say at this time that Arkham House is doing a fine job of bringing to us the best stories of the old masters not only in the Weird and supernatural field but in the science fiction field as well It would be inpossible to pick a favorie from so many fine stories which includ stories of Solomon Kane, Conan and King Kull. In this volumn the stories of Cona the barbarian with their blood and thunder combined with an weird atmosphere are almong my favorites An introduction by August Derleth, a memoriam by Lovecraft and T[[?]].Hoffmann Price combined with a colored jacket by Bock makes this one the best books of the year.
