(18) inspectors. So, for Burbee's information, I am only one-half of "Jay" Gibson! Understand Fran Laney is going to "expose" me, too. These snaps-zines are only one copy per issue, consisting of one sheet of paper with an illustration on one side -- I've been told the artwork is up to par -- and a write-up by "Jay" on the other. As a collector's item, they're both rare and hard to get. Maybe somebody will make a few bucks on the deal. JOE GIBSON JERSEY CITY, N.J. ************************* DEAR DAWN: I have an idea that probably won't work or isn't practice or something but since I don't know anything about running a fanzine I'm going to write it down and forget about it. Since you want suggestions for DAWN, here is a suggestion. I believe this idea has never been used in a zine, at least not in the way I am going to suggest. How would it be if each subscriber to DAWN that wishes to, to take part in the following plan? Have several different chain-letters on different serious subjects each on different routes go to 6 or 8 fans, who adds their comments and opinions until it reaches the end of the line and is returned to DAWN. The letters could be on most any serious subject of scientific or fan interest. This would make it a sure thing that there is always something new being discussed in DAWN. These letters would, of course, have to be started by the editor of DAWN and could be put in the form of a question. For example: Are the articles in Astounding too scientific? Your opinion. Or do you think that space is a vacuum? There, see what I mean? Just something to start a good discussion. I don't know whether it would work or not. Depends on how many people get DAWN and would be interested. DAWN #10 was a good issue. Hope it won't be the last. Butler's story CROSSROADS was the best story you have printed. I agree with my good friend Stan Crouch in all he says except I do not believe that the flying saucers are the products of the U.S. There has been no support to this opinion whatsoever. I think we stf fans should be open-minded. I don't think that anyone knows where the disks come from but I do believe there are such things and that they have been seen. As for Ray Nelson's letter; I disagree with his remarks on war. Sure war does a heck of a lot of good for some people but war is sort of like a fire, it can get out of control. If the third big war doesn't wreck the world completely, sooner or later if things go on with bigger and better weapons every few years man will find a way to destroy himself. Maybe a chain reaction, maybe radiation will sterilize the world or maybe everything will be killed off by germ warfare or poison gas or some things. Civilization is all in how you define it. If the world is civilized today, then civilization must mean we stop hitting one another with clubs and use atom bombs. Sincerely, ROBERT MARGROFF ELGIN, IOWA ************************* ED. NOTE: Fans, what do you think of fan Margroff's suggestion? Would it be a practicable thing for a fanzine? Let me hear from you on this subject and on any other subject you may be willing to expound upon. This is DAWN, the fanzine that prints your ideas and opinions on everything. Let us have your letters and your subs. With these to bolster us we can continue this combination of fanzines. *************************
