NEO This is the first and perhaps only issue of NEO. The purpose of it is simply propaganda for a BEERCON. Explanations undoubtedly are in order. THE BEERCON is a Midwest stf conference of very modest proportions to be held in Milwaukee over Labor Day, 1948. Because many Midwest fans are unable to attend the Torcon, I feel that we should stage a small affair they can attend, either instead of, or in addition to, the large convention. The basic purpose of the BEERCON is to get a bunch of Midwest fans together for a fan-gab. If 20 or 30 fans say they are coming (unlikely!) it may be necessary to collect some money to hire a hall or meeting-place. If 10 or 15 fans, or less, come, I may be able to get away with something smaller. For the day and not too far into the night, my own home (my folks', really, but they won't mind) will suffice for a small group. I do not intend to have any formal program. I enjoyed myself most at the Philcon when I was arguing with other fans about fannish subjects. For casual amusement there'll be an ay-jay convention (UAPA) here the same day, and as for liquid amusement, Milwaukee has a high percentage of taverns per unit of population. For most, however, I hope that the subtler type of intoxication will prevail. Do you like the idea of a BEERCON? Could you -- and would you -- attend? The Michifen seem to like the idea. How about the rest of you? Write Bob Stein, 514 W. Vienna Ave. Milwaukee 12, Wis., right now -- and let us know your reactions! THE "BEERCON" - MIDWEST FAN CONFERENCE - LABOR DAY, 1948
