From racist tracking program that push black students into useless programs - to laws that make working class mothers on welfare submit to sterilization or lose their welfare checks - to a California bill that would sanction lobotomies for "problem" prisoners. SDS and the Committee Against Racism (CAR) organized a picket line of 40 people. Our placards and chants told the story: "Down with racist lies - Support welfare mothers!" and "Hitler Rose, Hitler Fell - Racist Shockley Go to Hell!" Cops swarmed out to break up the picket line and protect Shockley's rights to spread "scientific" lies. After the demonstration we met. We discussed building this fight bigger and how we could use the upcoming SDS National Convention Against Racism to plan a nation-wide effort to stop Shockley wherever he raises his racist head. ...BERKELEY Arthur R. Jensen, Berkeley professor of Psych., published an article in the Harvard Educational Review (Winter 1969) entitled "How Much Can We Boost I.Q.?" In it Jensen says that: we all bear "intelligence genes" (many noted scientists wonder where he dug that "fact" up) and that "the number of intelligence genes seems to be lower, overall, in the black population than in the white." He also talks about sterilization of people on welfare: "Is there a danger that current welfare policies unaided by eugenic foresight (read: sterilization) could lead to the genetic enslavement of a substantial segment of the population?" At a time when many bills advocating sterilizing welfare mothers are being introduced (one just passed the Senate in Indiana), this man and his ideology spells real danger for black, latin and white working people. It is urgent that he and his idiology be exposed and defeated. At Berkeley 50 students from SDS, the Black Students Union and SESPA (a group of scientists and engineers) confronted the Berkeley chancellor (who gave out a line of bull.) The fight goes on! They planned a mass rally to expose Jensen and denounce his racist ideology, and to demand that SDS get re-recognized on the Berkeley campus. AND NOW THERE'S BRONFENBRENNER! Yet another professor is getting a nation-wide build-up for his racist theories of intelligence. He's Urie Bronfenbrenner, from Cornell. He wrote an article called "The Psychological Costs of Quality and Equality in Education" (Child Development, vol. 38, p.909, 1967,) His line: "Though the Negro child is not biologically inferior at the moment of conception (!), he often becomes so shortly thereafter." In addition, he claims black kids are raised so badly they're loaded with "character disorders" that result in diseased behavior: they're (shudder) rebellious! (We think rebellion is a very smart answer to the racist, rotten conditions the black kids face!) Bronfenbrenner backs integration - but "warns" that costs are high for the white kids. Seems the black children's diseased behavior is contagious...rebellion may spread! Bronfenbrenner's getting a first-class publicity build-up. He's speaking at MIT, BU & Tufts within a 2-week period. Demonstrate against this racist WHEREVER HE APPEARS. MIT, Friday Mar. 10, Bush room, bldg 10, :15. ______ _______ ______ Last January at a conference in San Francisco, the American Physical Society had this to say about Shockley--they voted 70-30 at a business meeting of 100 to denounce his ideology. They referred to his "study" as "blatantly racist", "criminal" and "pseudo-science". {Box of text: SDS BACKS PRISON REBELS! ...MINNESOTA "If we had it our way all you prisoners here would be free and all you wardens in the back of the room there would be IN JAIL!" (Thunderous applause, shouts of "right on," etc. -- standing ovation for ten minutes, guards glowering in the back of the room). That's the reception that the University of Minnesota SDS chapter got when they spoke to the Stilwater State Prison inmates a few weeks ago. The warden had set up a pacification program, where he allowed the prisoners to invite groups in to speak. A few days after SDS spoke, the warden said there would be no more SDS speakers and he would screen everyone who speaks there from now on. The prisoners took New Left Notes to pass around and the Progressive Labor Party record album "Power to the Working Class" got smuggled in. Many of the men said they thought the SDS speaker's ideas about a worker-student alliance and the SDS national convention were terrific, and everyone invited SDS back, much to the warden's dismay. Anyone from the Minnesota area who wants to go to the SDS National Convention with U. of Minn. SDS should call Ted Marble at 336-2793 in Minneapolis. ...BALTIMORE Towson State SDS is part of a Baltimore coalition to end brutality, racism and working class oppression in prison. The aim is to organize prisoners and build a movement among their families & other students & workers to back prison struggles. The first step is a demonstration & raly MARCH 22. SDS leaflets on the demonstration got a great response in the prison. The coalition is having a conference - open to all! - to make more plans. After 30 workers & students confronted them last Mon., they gave him back his job - for the time being. After 4 1/2 years, Brito was being paid $2.12/hr. Is this a living wage? Other Mexican, Chicano & women workers are in the same boat. Raymond Brito asked for a raise for 2 years. They offered him 5¢/hr. "I am poor," he replied, "but if that is the best you can do, you must be poorer." He challenged their slave labor system, so they tried to lay him off. But workers and students - from Casa, the organization of Mexican & Chicano workers which has fought and defeated racist immigration laws, MECHA, SDS and the UCLA Committee on Chicano Employment & the AFSCME stopped them. {Photo of wooden crosses in field} Pan-African Liberation Committee action at Harvard.
