CONTINUED from p. 1 his voice for a moment, he calls a cop, and with his bodyguard and this new friend, locks himself into a seminar room. (Some seminar!) Clearly, Herrnstein isn't going to answer our demand that his article and racist Berkeley Professor Jensen's not be taught. The demonstration moves to the office of psych department chairman Newman. He is "out to lunch." For the morning. But later we learn that he is willing to see us Thursday, Mar. 9, at 4:00. Herrnstein says he's being harassed. He may press charges. Apparantly doesn't know that he who gets kicked, kicks back. He thinks he can spear-head a nation-wide (not to mention England & elsewhere!) racist campaign, and get away with it. His views aid the government in "harassing" millions of blacks as well as white working class people - they're poor because of their genes, after all. (He says.) Welfare cuts, forced sterilization, it's all portrayed as the fault of "low residue" blacks. And he is trying to snow us with his article "I.Q.", full, as it is, with word-games geared to making it look like I.Q. tests are proof of intelligence and blacks are dumber than whites. The spread of Herrnstein's, Jensen's, Shockley's et al's views is an attempt to sabotage the struggles of poor people for decent conditions. Students around the country can stop this racist propaganda attack dead. That's the aim of the SDS anti-racism campaign, nationwide! {Photo of stuffed (gorilla?) bust with "Prof. HERRNSTEIN written on sheet of paper on bust} HERRNSTEIN...he wasn't talking ___________ {Photo of cars and people} Mass FORD strike wins Union - 1941 May Day is an international working class holiday that's celebrated throughout the world. It stems from the fight for the 8-hour day within the United States, which was brutally attacked by the cops on May 1, 1886. The celebration of May Day within this country in an advance for all people who are fighting this system. This May Day, Progressive Labor Party is calling a demonstration on Sat., April 29th, in Washington, D.C., raising the slogans: "30 hours work, for 40 hours pay", "Fight for Socialism", "Bust All Wage Freezes", "Smash Racist Unemployment", and "US out of Southeast Asia Now"! We are asking all groups and individuals who agree with the basic thrust of these demands to come to the demonstration and co-sponsor it. Naturally, various groups would want to raise specific slogans. Perhaps, SDS could co-sponsor the demonstration and bring to it the demand "Racists Off the Campus" - a demand which has inspired struggles all over. The final draft of this resolution to the convention will contain specific suggestions on how to implement this proposal. Ginger Neaher, Eddie Egelman Boston Progressive Labor Party Student Club {Text in box: TORONTO: Students Seize Library in Pro-Worker Fight UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO STUDENTS have been organizing for a month to "open up" access to a $43 million research library now being built. The library is supposed to be for professors & grad students only. Militants called for free access for all - including the working people whose hard-earned taxes are paying for the building. Students exposed how government & university officials planned the library as a top-level center for anti-worker, racist social science "research." A huge sheet posted in the Arts building said "These are the men the library is being built for," and listed several notorious U. of T. "scholars" - like a chemistry prof/trustee who pushes Herrnstein-Banfield-Shockley garbage about the intellectual "inferiority" of working class children. We're also fighting rotten treatment of library workers. AFTER 7000 STUDENTS, CAMPUS WORKERS & faculty signed petitions and groups of militant workers & community organizations sent messages of support, students upped the ante. Over 100 seized the main library for 24 hours. ONCE MORE the U. of Toronto student movement is alive and fighting back. Many are planning to join the large Canadian contingent at the upcoming SDS convention. Canadian students, facutly, campus workers or others interested in building for and/or ATTENDING the SDS convention - get in touch so we can discuss workshops and other participation, transportation, to get more literature, etc. IN TORONTO call Bill Schabas - 921-7937, 46 Robert St. IN MONTREAL call Evan Morriss - 271-2388, 6064 Hutchison.} HERRNSTEIN: Class structure genetically pre-determined! The data on I.Q. & social-class difference show that we have been living with an inherited stratification of our society for some time. (Richard Herrnstein, Atlantic Monthly, Sept., 1971.) _____________ A CALL TO ALL FOREIGN STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE 1972 SDS CONVENTION The Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) Convention at Harvard (March 30-April 2) offers a chance to do a very important thing - to begin building an international student movement against imperialism! As we know, the Imperialists are very united. Just look at Ceylon where last April Imperialists from everywhere - East and West - all combined to supply the reactionary Bandaranaike Government military aid to put down an insurrection of peasants, workers and students. Our only way to defeat Imperialism is to have the same and even greater unity. We feel foreign students in this country should establish ties and work with SDS. We can keep up these ties when we return to our countries. Already in Boston students from Panama, Ethiopia, India, Phillipines and Iran are talking with their friends about coming to the convention. SDS is the only principled anti-imperialist student organization in this country. It has consistently opposed all Imperialists; not falling for the trap of "good and bad" capitalists. It has consistantly tried to ally students with workers. It has given material support to the Vietnamese revolution through its often successful campaigns to stop military recruiting and ROTC. Currently SDS has decided to focus on exposing and eradicating racism which is an integral bulwork of Imperialism. Since colonial times Imperialists have used racism to divide the people they exploit and to win support for their extra exploitation of non-white peoples. The daily slaughter of Asian workers and peasants would be impossible without the aid of racist propaganda in the US armed forces and among the US population. Similarly US support for the fascist regimes in Southern Africa and Israel is "justified" through racist myths about blacks and arabs. This same racism is used to help Imperialist divide the peoples in our own countries. In India racism is used to separate Hindus and Moslems. In Ireland it sets Protestants against Catholics. In the Phillipines to divide people of Spanish origin from those of Asian origin. We could cite examples from every imperialist controlled country. Foreign students can come to the SDS convention and help to plan strategy for students to join the fight to smash this racism. We can plan common actions, propose resolutions, lead workshops and make ties with US radicals. We all have the same enemy and only through unity can we win.
