One peculiar and not unamusing effect of foregrounding of textuality was the proliferation of desks in Conceptual art. As the desk became a compound site for making, seeing, writing and reading about art, it was perhaps inevitable that it would be actually included in artworks as either photographs or installations. As an adaptable signifier of mental labour the desk could highlight the solitary yet social work that had been performed by the viewer. And as a theatre of interpretation it could set up the book as a mean term between the two. Conceptual Art History or a Home for Homes for America David Campany Dust, Collection, Refinement and Distribution A stantard oak desk, 3/4 scale. The three drawers at the side are smaller from top to bottom. A wide flat drawer above the knee space. All filled to overflowing with unfired fragments of clay, opened furthest at the bottom, then less in ascending order. The desk top is covered as well. A small oscillating fan is left on in one corner. There is not chair. A final piece submitted for a masters degree in ceramic studies.
