THE APPENDICES 75 SONG 29 dju:dadum - cypress branches la:rdi:nja- cypress cone kanggaralbunja - seeds of the cone General Translation; Cypress branches with cones full of seeds Comments Vide Song 109 110 [The selected series of songs given here belong to the ceremonies called the Djamala. Hundreds of others are sung during the performance of the Kunapipi. The subject matter of the Djamala and the related Kudjiga is similar ; both deal with the great Julunggul Snake, the sacred billabong of Muruwul, and the adventures of the Wauwalak. The great majority of songs concerns the natural species, which are represented also in ceremonial dancing, for the Kunapipi ensures their increase. This aspect is also apparent in the constant reference to the mateship of animals and birds their nesting, and production of eggs and young; while an undercurrent of eroticism runs through the Kunapipi cycle. The latter is centered on ceremonial copulation, since that aspect crystallizes the ritual intent and expresses the fundamental issues of Kunapipi doctrine.]
