October 1, 1971 ; 8-10 PM Fire Burning on Water, a simplified and elemental disaster, staged on the city pond as part of the nighttime intermedia program. Incident Light. "Before, reality was overlaid with metaphors by way of ornament; now the tendency is to eliminate the extrapoetical, or real, prop and to 'realize' the metaphor,. to make it the res poetica." Ortega y Gasset, The Modernist's Inversion of Metaphors I construct two rafts and anchor one, loaded with a pyramid of wood, in the middle of the pond. I use the second on the evening of the performance to paddle out and ignite the conflagration. It is constructed in the manner of the desperate and the innovative, consisting of three sculpture pedestals roped together. Sfumato A man sits with a small fire between his crossed legs. His right should is elevated and his upright arm and hand dissipate in smoke. His head is drawn aside, suddenly exalted. "J.B....What the artists are doing is similar to those great train race movies, where the train is in a race and suddenly runs out of coal,. so they start chopping up the coaches to fire the engine furnace and keep it going. This is what conceptual art does W.S. Do you see art dissolving into nothingness in the near future? J.B. No it's dissolving into comprehension. " "Willoughby Sharp Interviews Jack Burnham." Great Western Salt Works October 23, 1971; 8-9 PM A single mute performer is the focus of an outdoor performance piece The Penguin as a Domestic. The setting is the patio outside the modernist concrete-and-glass Museum of Art. The audience circulates freely through an outdoor "drawing/dining room" demarcated by four potted plants and a prayer rug, while an anonymous performer moves among them doing bird calls. In my roll as a bizarre butler, I am costumed in a tux but without shoes, in the fashion of the toy penguin, "the domestic" I remove my footwear as the initial requirement to tread in a sacred space. "We envision a new life style without special,. and therefore non-special occasions just as today, we refuse to distinguish between special occasion clothing and ordinary, everyday clothing, between work clothing and play clothing. " Gregory Battcock, A la Recherche du Temps Trivial -2-
