MEDICAL EXAMINATION Each student admitted to the State University of Iowa for the first time is required to submit a medical examination report to the University Student Health Service before his initial University registration. Thereafter, he is eligible to report to Student Health Service for medical care. Student Health Service attempts to substitute for the family physician while the student is attending the University. The offices are in the Children's Hospital. The staff consists of full-time physicians, nurses, and secretarial help; a staff physician is on call at all times for emergency care. If a student health physician feels that further consultation is necessary, the student may be referred to the special services that are available in University Hospital. A student who is too ill to stay in his room and who needs food, nursing care, and drugs is admitted to the Student Infirmary free of charge. If more extensive care and treatment are needed, he is transferred to University Hospital. The charges made by Student Health Service depend upon various factors. All office consultations are free, except that a small charge is made for such drugs as may be prescribed. If illnesses or injuries require special laboratory tests, the charges are paid for out of a hospitalization fund, which provides $50.00 for "extras" for two semesters (X-ray, cast, etc.) and thirty days in University Hospital on a cost basis. This coverage is designed to take care of those medical and surgical needs that arise while the student is in school on campus; it does not apply to elective operations, such as tonsillectomies, repair of old injuries, etc. We strongly recommend that you contact your family physician and make an appointment for your medical examination. After this is completed ask the physician to mail the medical examination forms to University Student Health Service in the self-addressed envelope. {Italics} All it takes is an eight-cent stamp. Do it now. {/Italics} YOUR ADMISSION LETTER If you are currently enrolled in high school or college, your admission letter will read as follows: We are pleased to inform you that you have been tentatively admitted to the State University of Iowa. Your admission to the University cannot be made final until you have successfully completed your current program of studies. Once you complete the final semester or quarter of schooling prior to enrolling in the University, it is {Italics} your {/Italics} responsibility to request that an official transcript of this work be sent to the Director of Admissions, State University of Iowa. You must assume this responsibility and make certain that this official transcript is sent to us as soon as possible after you complete your current enrollment. If you are eligible for admission, based on an evaluation of your final 4
