This number is associated with the student in all transactions between departments or colleges on our campus. We use it as a reference in answering inquiries directed to our office from outside agencies. Your University number belongs to you; it becomes a part of your permanent academic record, which is maintained permanently in the files of the Office of the Registrar. Therefore, we recommend that you memorize your University number, since you will be asked to refer to it frequently while you are a student here at the University. Your permanent University identification card bears your name and University number and the college to which you have been admitted. This card and its use will be explained in more detail later. Item B. Residence Classification Students are classified as either residents or non-residents. A determination of your residence status is made in Registrar's Office from notarized information supplied by you on your application for admission. If, after you receive your admission statement, you question your classification, please call at the Registrar's Office for a clarification of the matter. Item C. Parent's or Guardian's Name We are interested in the permanent home address of your parents or guardian, since we expect to correspond with them concerning your progress at the University during your enrollment here. We also record this information on your permanent academic record to be used for future reference. Item D. Academic Adviser Each new student admitted to the University is assigned an academic adviser. If you list a prospective "major" on your application form, we will assign you an adviser who specializes in advising students in this particular field. If you do not declare an academic major, you will be assigned a general academic adviser who works with students who, at the time of admission, have not declared a specific major. When you do declare a specific major, you will be assigned an adviser in that field. Your adviser will meet with you prior to registration, at the time and place designated on your admission statement. He will help you prepare your sched- 17
