RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS There are two branches of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at the State University of Iowa -- Army and Air Force. Normally, every freshman male student who is physically fit must complete two years of basic ROTC with either the Army or the Air Force to be eligible for graduation. Exceptions are made because of the advanced status of transfer students, age, citizenship status, certain categories of reservists and National Guardsmen, or for previous military service. a. Transfer Students (1) Transferees with 40 or more semester hours are exempt from ROTC. (2) Transferees with 24 to 39 semester hours must enroll for two semesters of ROTC. (3) Transferees with 8 to 23 semester hours must enroll for [italics] three semesters of ROTC. (4) Transferees with 7 or fewer semester hours must complete the full two-year basic ROTC course. (5) Students transferring semester hours without previous ROTC and who wish to enter the advanced ROTC course for the purpose of obtaining a commission must take the full two-year basic course. b. Exceptions for Age. For those students 23 years of age or over at the time of admission, ROTC is not required. c. Non-Citizenship Status. Those who are not citizens of the United States are exempt from the ROTC program. d. Band. Students may substitute band for ROTC; however, it should be noted that band will not qualify a student for entry into the advanced ROTC course. e. Membership in an Active Reserve or National Guard Unit. Those who are participating members of an active reserve or National Guard unit prior to their original registration are excused from ROTC upon presentation of the required evidence to the Military Department commandant's adjutant. f. Veterans Status. Veterans with at least ninety days of active duty with any branch of the United States armed forces are exempt from ROTC. They must present their separation records to the Registrar after completing one semester's work in residence. However, students wishing to enroll in the advanced course, either Army or Air Force ROTC, must take the two years of basic ROTC or have served a minimum active duty period of one year to qualify for enrollment. During your freshman and sophomore years, you may request deferment from the draft after the successful completion of one semester of ROTC. Deferments are granted at the discretion of the individual draft boards. 19
