[hand drawing] ROMANCE LANGUAGES YOU 'AVE PASS ZE TEST The Major. The requirements for a major are published by each department in its section of the University Catalogue. The typical number of hours required in each department is between 20 and 30. Quite often a department requires courses in related departments to support the work in the major; hence, the total number of hours required to major in a department may be considerably higher than that specified for the major alone. A chemistry major, for example, must take mathematics through calculus and college physics in addition to the courses required in chemistry. Many other departments have similar requirements. Electives. The electives taken by the student should be selected in consultation with the adviser. If at all possible, some courses should be selected in areas unrelated to the major but consisting of subject matter with which the student has had no previous acquaintance. The College of Liberal Arts urges that students select carefully the electives included in their programs of study so that they will obtain a well-rounded liberal education while undergraduates, deferring until graduate or professional college days the taking of more highly specialized work. TRANSFER STUDENTS A student entering the College of Liberal Arts after the completion of some college work elsewhere should be guided in the selection of courses by his Admission Statement, which lists the college requirements that remain to be completed in the major. The admission statement is thus a contract with the student and should be kept permanently since it is the basis for determining the degree requirements for the individual. 28
