For these reasons, the University requires each applicant to take the American College Tests. Through a careful study of the "profile of your scores and your high school performance and other person data, you, your advisers, and your professors can make a fair estimate of your present educa- tional development and your potentials for future achievement. Results of the Test The results of the American College Test are reported to you in terms of a percentile rank based on a group of 2,709 entering students at the State University of Iowa; that is, the scores which you achieved on each of the four sub-test (English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Natural Science) are reported in terms of the per cent of those entering freshmen students who scored below you on the English test. These are not the percentage of correct answer scores. Who Do you Stand? To obtain a description indicating how your scores on the test compare with the scores of other students entering the State University of Iowa, fill in the chart on Page 22 according to the following directions: 1. Look at the bottom of the chart. Note that the four sub-test and the composite are listed horizontally across the bottom of the chart. For each of the four sub-test and for the composite, there is a line running vertically from the bottom of the chart to the top of the chart. Now, note the percentile scores running vertically on either side of the chart. 2. To represent the percentile score which you achieved on each of the four sub-test and composite, make a dot on the vertical line above each test and the composite across from the percentile listed on the side of the chart. For example, if you achieved a percentile score of 52 on the English test, go up the vertical line above "English" until you come to the point on the line across from the 52nd percentile listed on the side of the chart. When you reach this point, make a dot on the vertical line. Follow the same pro- cedure for each of the sub-test and for the composite. 3. Connect each of the five dots with a line. This line is a profile of your test scores. 23
