Libraries Leslie Dunlap, Director of University Libraries, Lib., Tel. X 2248 The General Library houses about 500,000 volumes - almost half of the University's collection of books, periodicals and newspapers, plus over 435,000 government documents. Approximately 1,800 periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title on open shelves. In the card catalog at the General Library you can find titles of all the books owned by the University with the exception of those books kept in the Law Library. General Library hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.,. on Saturday; and 2:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. Schedules for departmental libraries vary. Information about them may be obtained at the individual libraries or at the information desk in the General Library. In addition to the General Library, SUI has the following departmental or specialized libraries in which any student may study: Art Library - Art Building, 18,000 volumes Chemistry-Botany-Pharmacy Library - Chemistry-Pharmacy-Botany Building, 42,500 volumes. Dental Library - Dental Building, 7,000 volumes Education-Psychology Library - East Hall 80,000 volumes Geology Library - Geology Building, 17,000 volumes Journalism Reading Room- Communications Center Law Library - law Building, 125,000 volumes Mathematics - Physics Library- Physics Building 32, 600 volumes Medical Library - Medical Laboratories, 65,000 volumes Music Library - Eastlawn, 23,000 volumes State Historical Library - State Historical Society Building, 106,000 volumes Zoology Library - Zoology Building, 15,000 volumes. Additional special collections are housed in the General Library, including The Bollinger Lincoln Collection , many of Ding Darling's original cartoons, the largest and most complete collection of Leigh Hunt material in the world, and other collections on Indians, typography, and railroads as well as University Archives. Liberal Arts Advisory Office H.C. Harshbarger, Assistant Dean of Advisory Services, Room 109 SH, Tel X 2165 Students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts are assigned faculty advisers by the Liberal Arts Advisory office. These advisers help the student with registration and assist in educational plans. After a student decides on an area of major concentration, his adviser will be a faculty member in the major department. Students planning to enroll in preprofessional courses are assigned special advisers. Any questions which liberal arts students have about advisers or majors should be discussed with the staff in the Liberal Arts Advisory Office. 56
