Forensics Association A forensics mixer early in the fall will be your introduction to Iowa's speech program. You needn't be an upperclassman to participate in debate and discussion activity-there is even a special contest for freshman orators and special divisions at some tournaments for novices. The University sends speakers to Big Ten tournaments and to other intercollegiate forensic events in the Middle West. Two forensic tournaments are held on the campus, one in December and one in March. Orators compete for the Hancher Oratorical prize and a trip to the Northern Oratorical League contest as representatives of SUI. Our debaters are also participants in Delta Sigma Rho national and district events. The discussion group is active in Iowa tournaments, the Grinnell Conference, the Western Conference tournament, and radio forums. A $10.00 prize goes annually to the freshman who receives top ranking in the Lefevre speech contest. The Lowden prize is awarded to outstanding senior debaters at the annual spring banquet when certificates of merit are given to all active participants in intercollegiate events. Students interested in public speaking, debate, or discussion should leave their names in Room 10, Schaeffer Hall. Notices of the first forensic meeting will be sent to them early in the fall. University Theatre You will have a chance to prove your dramatic talent in the University Theatre on the west campus. Even if you are not majoring in dramatic art, a cordial invitation is extended to you and all students to visit the theatre and, if desired, to participate in tryouts for plays. Valuable experience in directing, acting, scene-designing, lighting, and costuming is offered at SUI in one of the most completely equipped theatres in the country. It is widely known for its work in the production of new scripts. You will have an opportunity to see from six to ten plays and your Student Identification Card will admit you to all scheduled productions. For a reserved-seat ticket, present your I.D. card at the reservation desk in the east lobby of the Iowa Memorial Union before each play. Students interested in dramatic art or the theatre should consult members of the dramatic art staff for information. University Symphony Orchestra A short informal tryout early in the fall will be your first step toward membership in the University Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra presents five concerts a year, in addition to Christmas and Easter concerts with the chorus. Tuesdays and Thursdays are rehearsal nights. University Band Auditions for membership in the University Bands may be scheduled at your convenience by calling the University Bands Office, X 2322, and making an 62
