Men students on campus may take part in the WRA program by entering mixed golf and mixed volleyball intramurals, and by becoming members of the social dance club, which offers ten lessons by a professional dance instructor during the fall. The intramural sports program provides competition among housing units in volleyball, basketball, bowling, swimming, golf, tennis, badminton and softball. These activities are schedules at various times throughout the school year so that everyone may participate in one activity or another. The associated clubs are organized in connection with such sports as basketball, hockey, tennis, badminton, stunts and tumbling, the Penguins swimming club, rifle, camping, Orchesis, Seals, and social dance. Seals is an honorary swimming club and is affiliated with the National Academy of Aquatic Arts. Members are selected by tryouts in the fall, Practices are held weekly and the year is completed with the water show on Mother's Day Weekend. The Tennis Club has tournaments within its own group and also attends the Miliken Tennis Tournament. The other clubs meet for a period of at least six weeks at different times throughout the school year. One of the largest events of the WRA year is Canoe Capers, which consists of canoe races among all housing units on campus. A trophy is awarded to the housing unit that accumulates the most points in the race, This is held on the Iowa River during the Mother's Day Weekend. Home Economics Club All girls are eligible for Home Economics Club membership. During the year, the club sponsors the annual Baked Bean Supper, Christmas Party, and a Senior Tea. Group activities include various projects, state and national conventions , and meetings on the second Wednesday of every month, centered upon demonstrations, speakers and panels. An open house will be held in the fall. MEN'S ORGANIZATIONS The Dolphin Club Dolphin Club, national honorary swimming fraternity, promotes aquatic sports and water-safety activities at SUI. Every man who goes out for swimming or gymnastics in his freshman or sophomore year is eligible to become a probationary member. A years probation and a semester's pledgeship preceded initiation. If you are not in swimming or gymnastics competition you may qualify for membership by participation in specified activities. The Dolphin Show is a tradition which began as early as 1916 the festivities take place during Homecoming Weekend and are among the most colorful events of the year. 67
