ATHLETICS & RECREATION ATHLETICS While Intellectual growth is the primary purpose of college, another important phase of every student's life is athletics. Whether you want to play on the varsity or devote your efforts to supporting those who do, you will find that Iowa offers great opportunities for you. Iowa is associated with the Big Ten Conference and produces many fine teams in all sports. Iowa also has an extensive intramural program which gives every student a chance to participate in the sport or sports of his choice. There are activities to fit the needs of every student, man or woman, and skilled leaders have been trained to make your sports participation at Iowa a profitable one. Iowa stadium holds approximately 60,000 spectators for football games. The University also boasts an eighteen hole gold course, a nine hole course, thirty four tennis courts, a baseball diamond, the Field House, two outdoor cinder tracks, plus practice fields for football and baseball and numerous intramural fields. A sixteen lane bowling alley and billiard tables in the Iowa Memorial Union also play parts in the intramural and recreational program. RECREATIONAL FACILITIES Iowa's recreational facilities offer you a varied year round program of sports and fun. Gold. Special rates are maintained for student golfers at Finkbine Fields, the University's twenty seven hole gold course layout on the west campus. Ice Skating. When winter comes, your skates may flash on the ice at City Park or Melrose Lake. Bicycling. You may rent single and tandem bicycles at a local bicycle shop. Bowling. To increase your ability to get strikes and spares, the University offers the sixteen lane bowling alley in the Iowa Memorial Union. Tennis. The University's tennis courts are located by Old Armory, just down the hill from Old Capitol. Others are located near the Field House on the west campus. There is no fee for use of the courts. Skiing. You may check out skis and poles at the Women's Gym. There are many hills around Iowa City for winter sports. Billiards. Seven pocket billiard tables, three straight rail tables and two snooker tables are available to help you develop your skill with the cue in the recreational area of the Iowa Memorial Union. City Park is a popular setting for picnics and swimming. There are fireplaces and running water, a pavilion for parties and dancing, and other facilities for your use in the park, which is locates along the west shore of the Iowa River. Lake Macbride, located fifteen miles north of Iowa City, offers facilities for swimming, boating and picnicking and the Coralville Reservoir also provides boating and picnicking facilities. 70
