ALL-UNIVERSITY EVENT There are a number of worthwhile actives and programs planned for all SUI students. Among them are the University Lecture and Concert series which are programs planned not only for students, but for the entire Univer- sity family, including faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and parents and relatives of students. University Lectures Noted persons with many fields come to the campus every year to speak on the University lecture series in Iowa Memorial Union. You may obtain a ticket for each lecture by presenting your student Identification Card at the East Lobby desk in the Iowa Memorial Union a few days before the lecture. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Madam V. L. Pandit, Vincent Price, Senator Hubert Hum- phrey, and Meredith Willson have been among the lecturers appearing in recent years. University Concert Course The University Concert series presents outstanding artists and musical ensembles, such as the Minneapolis Symphony, to SUI audience every year. Held in the Iowa Memorial Union, the concerts are open to students, faculty, and townspeople. Faculty members and townspeople may purchase tickets. Student tickets may be obtained in advance of each concert by presenting the Identification Card in person at the East Lobby desk in the Iowa Memorial Union. Induction Ceremony Students and faculty gather on the east approach to Old Capital for a short but impressive ceremony on the first day of classes each fall. Deans, de- apartment heads, and members of the administration appear with President Hancher, who welcomes the students and reads the Oath of Fealty to the assembled group. The band plays the Alma Mater, "Old Gold," and the flag is raised over Old Capitol to mark the official beginning of the new school year. Dad's Day Each fall, one of the football weekends is dedicated to the dads of SUI students. The SUI Alumni Dad of the Year is chosen, fathers of the football players are introduced at the game, and a dinner and mass-meeting are held in honor of the dads. Homecoming Homecoming Weekend starts with the parade, pep rally, and the pres- dentation of Miss SUI on Friday night. Prizes are awarded to the housing units which enter the best floats. The town is crowded with alumni and 71
