STUDENT CONDUCT INTRODUCTION Upon registration at the State University of Iowa you automatically become a member of the University community with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities which go with this membership. Such rights and privileges include full use of the educational opportunities offered, the extensive physical facilities found on the campus, the opportunity to belong to student organizations and to participate in social, recreational, cultural, and spiritual activities, and the privilege of making your own decisions within the scope of the University's goals as an educational institution. As in any democracy, these rights and privileges are accompanied by responsibilities: to progress educationally up the academic ladder, to respect the rights of others, and to know and obey the rules and regulations developed by the University family for the good of the total community. The following University rules outline briefly what is expected of you while you are enrolled at this institution. Experience has shown that it is necessary in any society to set up some expected criteria of behavior for the members of that society. Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that individuals violate these regulations and, therefore, as members of this society, become subject to disciplinary action such as probation, suspension, or dismissal. The University recognizes its responsibility to the individual student, as well as to the student body as a whole, and makes every effort to assist you in your total education and growth during your tenure here. It is known that deviations from normal behavior patterns by individuals may be an indication of deeper troubles which may be eliminated, before serious difficulties arise, through sympathetic and competent assistance. For this reason there are many counselors and advisers at the University in offices such as the Office of Student Affairs, the University Counseling Service, Health Service, etc., who are here to be of service to you. If at any time you feel problems or compulsions arising for which you feel the need of assistance, please feel free to investigate any of these services. Be a good citizen and respect the rights of others, for it is in this spirit that the rules and regulations are conceived and administered. PERSONAL CONDUCT Standard of Conduct The University expects every student to conduct himself at all times and on every occasion in accordance with accepted standards of good taste and to observe the regulations of the University and the laws of the city, state, and national government which apply to matters of individual and group conduct. 73
