STUDENT LIFE <<15 organizations and activities through the process of chartering groups and budgeting of student activities fees. To facilitate its work, the Senate has seven standing committees: academic affairs, budgeting and auditing, community and external affairs, personnel, student organizations, and student rights and welfare. Chairmen of these committees serve on the Legislative Steering Committee which works closely with the Student Body President in developing legislative goals for the Senate. Executive Department - The primary spokesman and representative of the student body is the President of the Iowa Student Association. He is elected in the all campus election held annually in March. In addition to providing leadership to the Student Senate, he heads the executive department of the ISA. Through several commissions and committees many students have an opportunity to participate directly in their student government. Student Activities Board - The responsibility for the regulation and coordination of all student organizations and activities is vested in the Student Activities Board. Among its many duties are the responsibility for development of the master calendar of student activities, the supervision of the selection process for members of major executive boards, and the arbitration of any jurisdictional disputes between organizations. In addition, the Student Activities Board carries on a continuous review and evaluation of the programs funded by student activities fees in order to assure that these activities are serving the best interests of the students and the University community. Judicial System- Students participate actively in the review of disciplinary situations at The University of Iowa. On an all-University level, students have equal representation with faculty members on the Committee of Student Conduct, which hears cases involving the more serious violations of academic regulations. A Traffic Court, composed solely of students, handles appeals made in connection with the student traffic code. This court also acts as an appellate body in cases concerning election disputes and constitutional interpretations. Associated Women Students (AWS) All undergraduate women at The University of Iowa are members of Associated Women Students. Its officers are elected in the all-campus election, and the other twenty four Board members represent housing areas and areas of women's interest. Since AWS is the largest organization for women on the campus, every women comes into frequent contact with its many projects during the year and will find many opportunities for participation. Code for Coeds - This AWS publication is prepared annually and mailed to new undergraduate women, for whom it describes and pictures campus activities and social life. The editor and her staff are selected by the AWS Board. Freshman Council - AWS Freshman Council is composed of twenty two freshman representatives chosen in the all dorm elections. Its main purpose is ti promote special interest and enthusiasm in leadership fort AWS and other organizations. A Women's Day Program is sponsored by this group which meets weejly and works closely with various AWS committtes. Central Judiciary Board - The purpose of this group is to formulate and
