22 >> STUDENT HANDBOOK Student Publications Board of Student Publications - Four faculty members and five students make up the board which directs all University student publications. Faculty members are appointed by the President and students vote for the student members in the all-campus elections each spring. The Board decides questions of policy for The Daily Iowan and Hawkeye and chooses the editor and business manager for each publication. The Daily Iowan - The Daily Iowan newsroom hums with activity in the late afternoon and evening as student editors, reporters, copyreaders, photographers, and advertising staffmen "put out the paper." The editor and the business manager are chosen by the Board of Student Publications; desk editors are named by the editor. The newsroom is on the second floor of the Communications Center. The Daily Iowan is published tuesday through Saturday mornings throughout the year and is recognized by the trade as a professional paper. It is a member of the Associated Press and has full Wirephoto service. The newspaper is a laboratory for journalism students, but even a chemistry major or a student in any other field one may try his talents as a newsman. Residence unit subscriptions to the paper are included in each student's tuition and fees. Hawkeye - Within the covers of the Hawkeye, the Iowa Yearbook, appear hundreds of pictures of students, faculty, and campus. Seniors receive the Hawkeye free, but the underclassmen may buy a copy by signing a "Hawkeye note" in the fall and paying for tit at the beginning of the second semester. All students interested in writing, photography, office work, or selling contracts will be welcomed at the Hawkeye Office, 210 Communications Center. Tryouts for staff positions are announced early in the fall. Iowa Law Review - Membership on the Student Board of Editors of the Iowa Law Review is the highest recognition that can be attained by the student in College of Law. It is a quarterly publication planned, organized, and edited by students. A seven-man editorial staff is selected each spring from the Student Board of Editors which is made up from candidates invited to write for the Review. Transit Magazine - All students registered in the College of Engineering are members of the Associated Students of Engineering (AS of E). This organization publishes a monthly periodical, Iowa Transit, whose editor is selected by application. Speech and Theatre Groups Forensics Association - A forensics "mixer" in the fall is the introduction to Iowa's speech program. One needn't be an upperclassman to participate in debate and discussion activity, and there is even a special contest for freshman orator and special divisions at some tournaments for novices. The University sends speakers to Big Ten Tournaments and to other inter-collegiate forensic events in the Midwest. Two forensic tournaments are held on the campus, one in December and one in March. Orators compete for the Hancher Oratorical Prize and trip to the Northern Oratorical League contest as representatives of the University. U of I debaters are also participants in Delta Sigma Rho national and district events. The discussion group is active in Iowa tournaments, the Grinnell
