STUDENT LIFE << 23 Conference, the Western Conference tournament, and the radio forums. A $10 prize goes annually to the freshman who receives top ranking in the Lefevre speech contest. The Lowden prize is awarded to outstanding senior debaters at the annual spring banquet, when certificates of merit are given to all active participants in intercollegiate events. Students interested in public speaking, debate, or discussion should leave their names in Room 10, Schaeffer Hall. University Theatre - Every student has a chance to prove his dramatic talent in the University Theatre on the west campus. Whether or not one is majoring in dramatic art, a cordial invitation is extended to all students to visit the theatre and to participate in tryouts for plays. Valuable experience in directing, acting, scene-designing, lighting, and costuming is offered in one of the most completely-equipped theatres in the country, one which is especially well known for its work in the production of new scripts. Students interested in the theatre should consult members of the dramatic art staff for information. Students have an opportunity to see from six to ten plays annually without charge as the Student Identification Card will admit one to all scheduled productions. For reserved-seat tickets, it is necessary to present one's ID at the reservations desk in the South Lobby of the Iowa Memorial Union before each play. WSUI and KSUI - The University operates both AM and FM radio stations which broadcast educational, cultural, and informative programs. Students fine opportunities on their staffs for experience in all phases of radio operation. Music Groups Participants in large ensembles, as well as those who enroll for private instruction, may receive academic credit for their work. Consult the Music Office for details, Room 110 Music Building. University Bands - Auditions for men and women interested in membership in any of the University Bands: Marching, Hawkeye, Concert, Symphony, and Stage Bands may be scheduled at one's convenience by calling the University Bands Office (Room 15, Music Building, Telephone 353-5569), and making an appointment. Candidates should confer with Professor Frederick C. Ebbs, Director of Bands, before completing registration to receive credit for band. University Symphony Orchestra - A short informal tryout early in the fall is the first step toward membership in the University Symphony Orchestra. THe orchestra presents five concerts a year, in addition to Christmas and Easter concerts with the chorus. Tuesday and Thursday are rehearsal nights. Chamber Orchestra - Students may confer with anyone in the School of Music office about membership in the Chamber Orchestra composed of twenty-five to thirty members. This group studies music scored for small orchestra, reads manuscripts by students, accompanies soloists, and provides a laboratory for practice in conducting. University Oratorio Chorus - Those who desire membership in the Oratorio Chorus will try out during the week of registration. No previous experience is necessary. Prompt attendance at Tuesday and Thursday evening rehearsals is required. The
