26>> STUDENT HANDBOOK skilled leaders have been trained to make your sports participation in Iowa a profitable one. Iowa stadium holds approximately 60,000 spectators for football games. The University provides an eighteen-hole golf course, a nine-hole golf course, thirty-four tennis courts, a baseball diamond, the Field House, and the Women's Gymnasium which provides swimming pools, basketball courts, etc., two outdoor cinder tracks, plus practice fields for football and baseball and numerous intramural fields. A sixteen-lane bowling alley and billiard tables in the Iowa Memorial union are included in the intramural and recreational program. Although a few of the programs are coeducational, most of the athletic activities and organizations are separate for men and for women. Women's Recreation Association - The Women's Recreation Association offers a wide variety of sports and recreational activities through intramural and club programs. Every woman student on campus may become an active member by participation in either phase of the program. Men students on the campus may take part in the WRA program by entering mixed golf and mixed volleyball intramurals, and by becoming members of the social dance club, which offers ten lessons by a professional dance instructor during the fall. The intramural sports program provides competition among women's housing units in volleyball, basketball, bowling, swimming, golf, tennis, badminton, and softball. These activities are scheduled at various times throughout the school year so that everyone may participate in one activity or another. The associated clubs are organized in connection with such sports as basketball, hockey, tennis, badminton, stunts, and tumbling, the Penguins and Seals swimming clubs, rifle, camping, Orchesis, and social dance. Seals - This is an honorary swimming club affiliated with the National Academy of Aquatic ARts. Members are selected by tryouts in the fall. Practices are held weekly and the year is completed with the water show on Mother's Day Weekend. The Tennis Club has tournaments within its own group and also attends the Milliken Tennis Tournament. Orchesis - This is a national modern dance group for majors in dance. Periodically, dance programs by students and by professional groups are presented. One of the largest events of the WRA year is Canoe Capers, which consists of canoe races among all housing units on campus. A trophy is awarded to the housing unit that accumulates the most points in the race.This is held on the Iowa River during the Mother's Day Weekend. Intramural Sports for Men - An extensive program provides competitive and recreational sports for every interested male student. Teams are made up by residence and organization groups for thirty different team sports and recreational activities. Intercollegiate Athletics - Varsity teams compete in football, basketball, track and field, baseball, swimming, golf, wrestling, tennis, cross-country, fencing, and gymnastics.
