The Panhellenic Council, governing body of the sorority system, reapproved this restriction this year as it has been for more than ten years. The reasoning of the council was that in setting this rule it gives the senior girls the opportunity to live in their house for an extra year and also that living in the dormitories is an invaluable experience for the incoming freshmen girls. SORORITIES WORK TOGETHER To RAISE NUMBERS BY DEBBIE FREUDEL Greek woman at Iowa have lately been witnessing a rather unusual come-back in spite of all the problems they have been facing, Within the past three weeks, over 30 girls have pledged informally, pushing the total number of pledges this year up to 294. However, this total falls short of last year's. Miss Mardell Miller, advisor to the women's Panhellenic Association says that it appears the overall system is coming up. She cited the fact that the group effort to keep the Sigma Tau house on campus united the sororities, who were working as a system, for one another, rather than competing against each other. Representatives from every house, working as Panhellenic delegates to rush for the SDTs were evidence that the sorority girls were wiling to work together as a whole in order to keep the house on campus, and therefore keep the Greek system going. Unfortunately the dilemma of the Sigma Delta Taus also revealed that other sororities could possibly be facing the same problem in the near future due to the evident decline in the number of girls going out for rush. Only 201 girls were pledged last fall in comparison to the 282 girls who accepted bids in the fall of 1969. The number of girls pledged by May of last year totaled 419. Today, the number of pledges totals 294, which leaves 115 openings to fill by May in order to meet last year's standing. However, these 115 openings still do not fill the quota for the sorority system as a whole; large and small houses alike are suffering from their inability to fill their openings at the present time. Proposals have been brought before the Panhellenic Assoc. which would assist the smaller houses in raising the numbers so they may continue to function financially within the Greek system. Also, a special effort is being made to inform prospective University of Iowa students of the benefits of being a Greek woman on campus. Hopefully, more girls will go out for rush next fall, and the Greeks will have sound footage here at Iowa.
