"IOWANS NEED HELP" SOUTHERNERS SINCERE Southern hospitality is a reality. It exists, it is practiced, and it is most welcome, And, it is especially predominant within Greek fraternities and sororities. In one week of being exposed to the southern Greek's outgoing personalities, (for clarification, our spring break coincided with mostly southern schools, including Arkansas, North Carolina, Florida, and others) I was convinced the Greeks at Iowa needed a little refresher course how to again become a unified chapter, and "How to win friends and influence people." Greek fraternities of the south are one. They roomed, traveled, and partied together, making the most of the friendships found through their bond. They are unified yet individualistic as one member of the Theta Chi fraternity explained to me, "We just enjoy living and doing projects together. I've never felt closer and more of an integral part of a group in all of my life. It's great!" Some may say the attitudes were different because of our Florida atmosphere, but there remains one example to reduce the significance of the atmosphere. One night of seven we partied with a good proportion of the populace from Iowa. Only one of about 20 was a student from the University of Iowa. Their conversation was ego centered, the attitude was cold, their manners tended to be of the same description, and their pettiness was disgusting. The entire evening we witnessed the "brothers" in a hot argument about who owed how much beer and to whom. One common courtesy noticed immediately was the method of introductions. Upon walking into a room with 5 or 10 students from Ohio as part of the group, those from Arkansas approached each stranger with an open hand and a friendly smile offering each a beer. Previous to their entrance, the Ohio students had not even been courteous enough to offer any people of the room, except those from their school, a drink after they had come into [[underline]]our[[end underline]] room. There appeared, as you might conclude, no pettiness, no argueing, no feelings of antagonism, nor any cold shoulder attitude which we had to experience as we began to know "southern frat-men." It was great. And, it could be said, sincerity [[underline]]was[[end underline]] the key word with establishment of friends as the basic goal. By Debbie Santerelli Now Marijuana Is the Social Vice Our country had an era in its history known as the Roaring Twenties. This was the period of time when an increased emphasis was placed on leisure time the achievement of a college education, and the general prosperity and relaxation after the first world war. Also during these years the use of any form of alcoholic beverages was illegal. Thus it was illegal for anyone, under age or of legal age, to consume any type of alcohol. The youth inhabiting the nation's expanding collegiate system continually and knowingly broke this law, a law that was being violated by many other citizens of the country. On the campuses fraternities experienced their initial gigantic growth during this period and it was also then when fraternities achieved their infamous reputation for large rowdy parties. Of course they drank and drank illegally though the illegality never haltered their good times. As long as the men kept it discreet, everything was alright. It was not only the Greek system that drank and had wild parties but also the residence in the dormitories and residential housing. The entire country was enjoying an atmosphere of paranoia in breaking a federal law but not worrying about the circumstances. Though it is 1971 and prohibition has been lifted for over 35 years, the students of any educational system are still breaking laws. Around the same time that prohibition was lifted, a law prohibiting the use of marijuana was enacted. This law has not been taken seriously, just as the prohibition was not taken seriously. Students now, instead of going to speak easys for an illegal drink, conceal themselves from the law and sneak a smoke illegally. To estimate the approximate use of marijuana on today's campuses would be very difficult indeed because along with alcohol, marijuana has become another social vice on today's campuses.
