WE DEMAND AN END TO IMPERIALISM For nine long years the U.S. has continually escalated the war in Vietnam: 41,000 Americans and 500,000 Vietnamese have been killed in this effort to keep Vietnam part of the "free world". Richard Nixon, like Lyndon Johnson, has said, "We seek no wider war" Yet he has expanded the war once again by resuming bombing of the North and sending American GIs into Cambodia. His claim that we will be out of Cambodia by June 30 sounds like MacNamara's 1965 claim that the war would be over in six months. But the people of Cambodia want American troops no more than do the people of Laos, Vietnam or Thailand; U.S. intervention in Indochina is not to preserve democracy, but to support dictatorships which oppress the people. The real governmental policy seems to be to open up Indochina to U.S. investment, and to secure raw materials and cheap labor for American capitalists, just as the U.S. has done in Latin America and elsewhere. ( The Thieu-Ky regime encourage American investments by enforcing a maximum wage of $1.40 per day for Vietnamese workers.) University support for this war is manifested by the presence of ROTC on this campus. Eighty percent of the Army's junior officers are trained by ROTC. Col. Pell head of Harvard ROTC before the students throw it off the campus, had said that ROTC is absolutely essential to the military machine. Col. Shockey of UI ROTC has pointed out with pride that one of the commanders of the invasion of Cambodia was ROTC trained. By eliminating ROTC from this campus we can strike a blow against U.S. policy in Vietnam and around the world. SMASH THE WAR AND ROTC !!! WE DEMAND AN END TO POLITICAL REPRESSION Political repression is not something new on college campuses, it is merely becoming more and more apparent. During the past several years, direct attempts have been made to intimidate students on this campus -- the Dow Demonstration, the Marine Demonstration and recently the action against the Labor Department, December 10. During the past week, people have been arrested for peacefully demonstrating against the war and racism. In addition, Frank Smiley, city manager, recommend to the city council that an injunction be issued that made any effective political action illegal. The injunction was put into effect Thursday morning. It is clear, therefore, that the reason the university continues to come down on politically active people is that the administration is afraid those people might reveal the true goals of the power structure to many other people. They hope by repressing these people to intimidate others into remaining politivally inactive
