March 20, 1970 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 4 JOSEPH MOMBERG IS NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF CIRUNA The Council on International Relations and United Nations Affairs held its annual meeting for the election of a new president last Tuesday, March 10, at 8:00 p.m. Former President John A. Eckstein was succeeded by Joseph C. Momberg in the only elected office of the Council. Some of CIRUNA's most recent accomplishments were reported: Biafra Food and Relief Drive: The second Biafra Drive to be sponsored by CIRUNA was held October 6, 1969, to January 23, 1970, on campus. Its aim was two-fold: to educate the Iowa City community concerning the history of the conflict and the resultant malnutrition and mass-starvation of the people involved, especially the children and to raise funds to be sent through the Biafra Relief Services Foundation to the troubled areas. Pamphlets and articles were distributed at the tables in the Gold Feather Lounge, at community high schools and throughout the several lectures given by Nathaniel Imyana--a member of the Ibo tribe from Nigeria--and a documentary film on the situation was shown fifteen times on campus. Approximately $600 was raised in dormitory and community activities and sent to purchase food and medical supplies for the persons suffering from hostilities in Nigeria. University Curriculum Development Under the sponsorship of CIRUNA and Dr. James N. Murray, the University of Iowa State Department Study Group was organized as an independent program providing three semester hours of credit in Political Science. Forty students participated in this program, which was designed by CIRUNA members to re-evaluate current United States foreign policy. Also under the aegis of curriculum development should be included the simulation game entitled "Crisis in the Balkans" held October 18, 1969, in the Union. Foreign Studies Information This year the CIRUNA office served as the center for the distribution of materials for the Center for International Studies in the area of foreign studies and job opportunities. Several students have availed themselves of this service and many have also utilized the connections our chapter has through the national office with regards to jobs in New York. FRESHMEN WANTED: A national daily newspaper syndicate would like the name of a freshman student on the Iowa campus who is a good photographer, and who can furnish some photos of the campus and comment on the frosh attitudes towards religion and science. Freshmen students who are interested should contact Randee Fieselmann - 353-5761.
