Page 6 HAWKEYE UNITED METHODIST October 1980 PRAYER FOR EQUALITY Almighty God You have created us in Your own image, male and female. And You hold us to account for the use of all our powers and privileges - Guide, we pay You, the people of this state and their representatives; That by wise legislation and faithful administration The rights of ALL may be protected "Let Justice roll down like waters. And righteousness like an everflowing stream " (Amos 5:24) May the structures of our society reflect Your nature. And equality under law manifest the value You place on each individual, That we may live together in Peace and Justice and mutual respect! Amen The Rev. Alison M. Cheek Episcopal Diocese of Virginia Unclouding the Issues Clouding the real issues of the Equal Rights Amendment are some misconceptions that need to be addressed. The Equal Rights Amendment will NOT affect: the right of privacy in public restrooms ( There is an existing constitutional provision guaranteeing privacy.) The Equal Rights Amendment will NOT affect: the social relationships between women and men (the ERA only pertains to legal relationships) The Equal Rights will NOT affect: the right of any woman to be a mother and homemaker. (The amendment will not dictate a woman's decisions regarding family and career) -Lucille M. Anderson Chariton IOWA ERA * "All men and women are, by nature, free and equal and have certain inalienable rights - among which are those of enjoying and defending life and liberty, acquiring and possessing and protecting property, and pursuing and obtaining safety and happiness. Neither the state nor any of its political subdivisions shall on the basis of gender, deny or restrict the equality of rights under the law." *Proposed amendment to Section 1 Article ! Constitution of the State of Iowa (Bill of Rights) New language is underlined. A Matter of Justice..... The Iowa ERA is a matter of justice for both men and women. It will insure future generations of Iowans permanent equality of rights, responsibilities and opportunities. Iowa ERA does not mean that men and women are the same. It would not mean interference in private matters such as how a family operates whether a wife chooses to work outside the home, separate restrooms or separate sleeping quarters. And it would not mean that Iowa would have to change existing laws concerning homosexual marriages, rape, or abortion. We know because of the experience of 114 other states with state ERAs. For example Maryland, which has had an ERA since 1972 reports "Maryland's implementation of the ERA has been systematic and thoughtful. A delecate balance of rights and responsibilities has been maintained and expanded through the amendment. NO SURPRISING OR UNFORTUNATE SITUATIONS HAVE RESULTED from legislative administrative or judicial application of the ERA" We support the Iowa ERA because it will be good for Iowa, it is an agreement with out Christian faith, and because we want to be treated as persons (not sexual stereotypes) with different talents and interests. -Brian and Rita Carter, Sioux City Margaret and Arden Borgen, parents of three sons- Paul, Peter and John - are members of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Webster City. Arden senior vice-president and general manager of Harris Metals, Inc., serves in several church roles. He is a member of the Conference Council on Ministries, the Conference Board of Church and Society, and chairs the Emerging Issues Division. In Asbury Church, he is chairperson of the Administrative Board. District chairperson of the Legislation, Health and Welfare Committee, Margaret serves on the Conference Legislative Action and Coordination Committee and is a new member of Commission on the Status and Role of Women. She is president of the Iowa PTA and director of the Alternative High School in Webster City. Margaret's commitment to Iowa ERA is unmistakable. She is a member of the Iowa ERA Speakers Bureau, represents the Iowa Annual Conference on the Governing Board of Iowa ERA Coalition, and co chairs the Hamilton County ERA Coalition. Experience Broadens Scope As little girl, I cherished the customary happily ever after dreams of marriage and family giving little, if any, thought to the place of women in our society. But as often happens, my dreams were shattered by reality, and , in a few short years, I found myself alone with the responsibility of two small daughters. Suddenly the matter of job opportunity and equitable salaries was very important. The difficulty of establishing credit in my own name was an immediate concern. I began to notice the struggles of other women in similar or even more difficult situations. I realized that here, in a land which prides itself on freedom and justice for all people, one half the population was not treated with equality or justice, and therefore could not be truly free. Very quickly I became, and continue to be , a strong advocate of the Iowa Equal Rights Amendment. - Eloise Cranke, Traer
