was merely a set of step-up resonators with a gong at one end and a large daisy at the other. Silently, the girl slipped in. She was tall and lissom, sparkling with life. 'John!' she said suddenly. Instantly several things happened at once. The small hammer slipped, the gong vibrated, a shrill note sliced through the air, and the man fell back, clutching his ears, his face twisted in pain. Startled, the girl hurried forward. 'John!', she cried, 'John! What's wrong? What happened?' Shaking his head, John McKay stared at her. His eyes were on her lips, and a sudden fear sprang into his eyes. Rising, he grabbed her arms. 'Say that again!' he gasped hoarsely. Puzzled, the girl repeated her words. With a groan, John sank back into his seat. 'I'm deaf!' he rasped. 'Not quite.' said a low, calm voice. John stared around in wild hope, his eyes falling on the girl. 'No,' said the voice, 'not her. Look over here.' John obeyed, his eyes going to the daisy. Its petals were quivering slightly. John merely stared, then staggered back as the truth hit him. He had heard the plant. 35
